"MacArthur Park" what the F**K do these lyrics mean?

lol Does anybody have the slightest idea what the hell this song is referring to?
I get that it's the end of an affair of some kind, but all that crap about the cake in the rain? anybody know?

Yeah, it's a metaphor, but a vague silly one at best. Either way, it's a great song, and Donna Summer's 18-minute interpretation of it is tops for me!

I don't think there is any metaphor. I think the song is about someone who really baked a cake and left it out in the rain. Misplaced the recipe and everything. I love the song dearly. Very sophisticated musically. One of the best disco songs ever.

Okay, but maybe it's just a metaphor for all of her hopes and dreams.

Now, the lyrics to "Strawberry Letter 23" have confused me a lot more than "MacArthur Park".

The lyrics to "Strawberry Letter 23" by the great Shuggie Otis to me has some of the best lyrics by anyone. I have the lyrics typed up, framed and hanging on my wall!

Shuggie claims his girlfriend used to send him strawberry- scented letters; he said he was using the psychedelic lyrics to describe the letters and his feelings about her...

Yeah, but the lyrics were written by Jimmy Webb, back in 1967, originally for the group the Asscociation; they didn't want to do it, Richard Harris jumped at the chance and had a big hit with it in '68 - it wasn't disco till Donna Summer got her mitts on it...

I'm aware. I've been a fan of the song for a long time, so I know who did it first. I was talking about the only good version of it.

I was going to use the word "psychedelic" to describe the lyrics, too! I just figured the writer must've been smoking some heavy sh*t, or eating magic brownies, or something.

Hey pali, uh, it's beautiful that I have Shuggie's lyrics on my wall! Isn't that just "neat"?

I saw Richard Harris on one of those talk shows when I was very young and he stated that the song was about scoring and taking drugs. No lie!!!! But I loved Donna Summer's version better!!! More drama and she could sing!!! Still can!!!!

Donna just did a new Q&A interview with Attitude magazine, and a fan asked her what this song really means. Here is her response...

"I think it's a great lyric,a great metaphor for a love affair that's gone wrong.Because a cake is so fragile and it's not something you would just leave in the rain, but if you did sit it in the rain,it would surely be destroyed, and if you had a love with someone that was fragile, you wouldn't take that situation and subject it to circumstances it couldn't withstand. So that's what it's about.I like songs like that, like "Nights In White Satin"---what does that mean? Is it about someone getting married,or someone that's died? You can project whatever you want onto it."
