If u want music from a certain year, then buy a soundtrack as they date the quickest! Plus u get artists on that labels roster that knowones heard of and they end up quite good.....know what i mean?.....Anyway I love soundtracks, though they r very hard to find as they go out of print very quickly.....
The best st's r the ones where all the tracks r actual songs (and not instrumentals) and they r all exclusive to that st! Example would be the turtles st, where i think all the songs were exclusive to that one movie and no songs were off one of the artists albums (except St Pauls song) or like beverly hills cop 2 with "Shakedown" by bob segar being exclusive to just that soundtrack! I love:- 1) Mo money soundtrack 2) Boomerang soundtrack 3) Beverly hills cop 2 4) New jack city 5) teenage mutent ninja turltles motion picture soundtrack 6) White men cant jump 7) Disneys:- Oliver and company st ("Why should I worry" "Streets of gold" "Once upon a time in newyork city") A goofy movie st (love Tevin Campbell's songs) Many more individual tracks but certainly the first 6 r great all the way through.....

Purple Rain
More Music from 8 Mile (one of the best rap compilations ever. Any rap fans need to check this out) Romeo & Juliet Waiting to Exhale I am Sam (all Beatles covers) I Know What You Did Last Summer (God-awful movie, but awesome music. One of the coolest covers of all time is "Summer Breeze" by Type O Negative. "Hush" by Kula Shaker is great, and I LOVE "Clumsy" by Our Lady Peace.)

I'll just skip the obvious Princey soundtracks. Excluding those, my faves are:
-Pretty In Pink (the alterna-music primer for my generation) -The Butcher Boy (quirky interludes and good songs) -Trainspotting (honors go to part 1, the 2nd soundtrack was good but not AS good) -Grosse Pointe Blank -Natural Born Killers (with the dialogue in the mix, this is an incredibly creative soundtrack) -Splendor (crap movie, but AWESOME soundtrack)

NON-PRINCE:
Mo' Money (love it) The Hours (for the beautiful instrumental orchestration)

Hey, I like that God-awful movie, and I do like the Summer Breeze remake (though it pales in comparison to the Isley Brothers version ). I guess we're talking soundtrack compilations, whether it be new material or old? I like: The Craft 24 Hour Party People Saturday Night Fever That's the Way of the World Magnolia Nashville Superfly Virgin Suicides Kill Bill: Vol 1 Pump up the Volume [This message was edited Sun Jul 25 9:33:15 2004 by RipHer2Shreds]

I thought the movie was every bit as good as the book. Middlesex, his follow up, is an even better novel. I also think the accompanying VS soundtrack of songs from the 70s was very good.

like Gooey, i'd have to say Amadeus. also, i'm going to ignore soundtracks which are basically albums for modern artists, because there are far too many - prince, tom waits, elliott smith etc.
also: - the nightmare before christmas - an american tail - batman (the elfman one) - the big lebowski - Shrek 2 (unbelievably. Nick Cave, the Eels and Tom Waits in a Shrek movie - i practically choked when i heard these tracks in the movie ) - the man who wasn't there - o brother, where art thou.

That one is so obvious I forgot about it. I love me some Burton/Elfman tunes. And Nina Hagen singing them in German. Even though I am Dutch myself.

And I forgot "Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi", more commonly known as Spirited Away and the soundtrack to "Da hong deng long gao gao gua", aka Raise The Red Lantern.
Two amazing soundtracks!

NWF said: Agreed on those two. Forgot them! Somebody else mentioned Hedwig and the Angry Inch. I would have said that one except I flat out do not like the movie soundtrack. I like the production on the original cast recording for the Off-Broadway show much more. Better instrumentation, more lively, and better production!

I also think the accompanying VS soundtrack of songs from the 70s was very good. Yep, it's one of the few films that does the book justice, I think. I'll have to read Middlesex. I meant to after reading VS, and I just never have. Thanks for reminding me of it!
