Can't Get Enough... ...Of That FUNNY Stuff.
On a lighter note, how about listing your favorite "Novelty" or just straight out funny tunes. These are the tunes that are usually purposely designed to be funny/stupid. For example: Disco Duck - Rick Dees (an obvious one) Valley Girl - Frank Zappa (social satire set to music) Tip Toe Through The Tulips - Tiny Tim (maybe not intentional, but funny nonetheless) and... Witch Doctor - David Seville (aka Ross Bagdaserian, aka Mr. Chipmunk) Ooo eee,ooo ah ah ting tang Walla walla, bing bang Ooo eee ooo ah ah ting tang Walla walla bing bang... Ooo eee ,ooo ah ah ting tang Walla walla ,bing bang Ooo eee ooo ah ah ting tang Walla walla bing bang (Now that's some high-brow lyric writing.) Anyway, you get the idea. Let's see who can come up with some really funny ones. You can take the easy route and list a bunch of Al Yankovic tunes, but the more obscure the better the chance for something new to get a laugh from. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...rmusic.htm "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. Sometimes it needs to be done: Mr Blobby - kept Take That off Christmas #1 Bob The Builder - kept Westlife off Christmas #1 I have no problem with that whatsoever, but I think they should stick to only being released around Christmas, or all be charity records.

Yeah. One of the criteria for "Novelty" status is that the tune takes advantage of some current day (for its time) cultural trend. After reading this i've got to find out if SD had anything to do with it. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...rmusic.htm I guess it's true! Root Boy Slim: God Bless the Root Boy and All Who Sailed with Him By Mike Compton Put a quarter in the juke Ok, friends; it's time to get serious. I'm going to write about a couple of recordings that I really treasure, that you need to know about, and learn to love as I do, if you don't already. No irony here, no jokes &endash; these are amazing good records from a guy &endash; and a band &endash; who understood and addressed the wasteland of 70's rock and culture better than anyone else I can think of. I'm speaking of one Foster Mackenzie III and his crew of musical pirates, otherwise known as Root Boy Slim and the Sex Change Band. This outfit's eponymously titled first album and their follow-up "Zoom" stand in my book as two of the greatest rock & roll efforts ever committed to vinyl. That's the only format you'll find them in, too, by the way. Believe it or not &endash; and you'll wonder why not when you hear them &endash; these have not been re-issued on CD. The good news is they do turn up in the LP bins, and usually for the generic $8-10 everybody asks for 20-year-old unknown vinyl.. Pay it. Now, the story. The Root and his band were minor fixtures on the East Coast 2nd level club circuit through the late 70's. Out on the left coast here, who knew? It was all Fleetwood Mac & Little Feat & that kind of glitz. The Sex Change Band was about sex-and-drugs-and-rock-and-roll, and no apologies. Root Boy Slim sang that line and he meant it. Becker and Fagen (those guys) caught the act in D.C., the word is, and ended up getting them into a record contract. The rest is, sadly, forgotten history. while you were listening to Jackson Browne and Neil Young and God knows what else, the Sex Change Band (featuring Ernie Lancaster on guitar and no less than Ron Holloway on sax) were putting down such immortal masterpieces as "Boogie Till You Puke", "I Used to be a Radical", "Heartbreak of Psoriasis", "My Wig Fell Off", "World War III", and "Dozin' and Droolin'". Yes&emdash;those titles accurately reflect the lyrical content of the songs. furthermore, that band was so tight, and so good, that, well, Little Feat does sound sloppy by comparison. I'm not kidding. This was some funny, solid-rocking, basically smart music by a bunch of really killer musicians who could jump all over the styles of the day and still come out sounding timeless and unique. I repeat, great records. I urge you to seek them out and enjoy the hell out of 'em. To close, let me refer you to this bit from page 133 of Steely Dan; Reeling in the Years, a starchy-stiff band biography by Brian Sweet (Omnibus Press, 1994), where Mr. Sweet notes: "Soon after their return (to NY), Fagen discovered a bad taste blues singer called Root Boy Slim…Steely Dan's patronage had no impact whatsoever upon sales of his album and Warner Bros. dropped the band. They signed to Illegal records and followed their debut with an album called "Zoom" a year later which was also a flop. (Root Boy Slim's own life was an unhappy one, too. He became an alcoholic and drug addict and was admitted to various institutions several times. He turned to writing poetry, but eventually died in 1993, aged 48) Sic transit gloria, huh? but I suggest you consider the source, the endorsement, the subject's intention, and most of all, the records themselves. "Unhappy"? Hell, I don't know. Listen to the records and you tell me. Root Boy Slim knew what he was up to and he left a couple of certifiable gems. http://home.earthlink.net...sue12.html

What makes a novelty record one, anyway? Those work. Regarding your question, here's the best definition of a novelty record i've read. "Any record that stands out from the pack for reasons other than its own sheer excellence." Now that could mean because it's: Funny - Valley Girl by Frank Zappa - This is generally not the intent of a pop record. Ridiculous - Tip Toe Through The Tulips by Tiny Tim - IMO, his voice just sounds ridiculous. This is probably not the best example but you get the idea. The artist (small "a") - King Tut by Steve Martin - A record released by an artist from another field. Another example would be Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds by William Shatner. Or it takes advantage of some timely cultural trend. Kung Fu Fighting as an example might have taken advantage of the popularity of the TV series or martial arts films. (Don't know if i've got the proper timelines here.) Best explanation I can give. And i'm not about to start W.W.III over any Prince tunes. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...rmusic.htm [This message was edited Tue Aug 3 17:44:59 2004 by theAudience] "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn.
