heartbeatocean said: I adore this movie. I worship Gene Wilder. I love the quite sophisticated undercurrent of commentary about modern culture, morality, consumerism, the media, and class issues vs. the idealism of childhood that Wonka himself embodies. The cowboy kid gets stuck inside a TV for god sakes.
Major co-sign on this! Gene Wilder is incredible, and deserved an Oscar for this performance. He still is sadly underrated for his amazing work. This really is an adult commentary disguised as a children's film. It's also my favorite movie from my childhood-and still holds up to this day. As I got older I realized all the layers it actually had-and the interesting things like the fact Gene's hair gets wilder and wilder as the movie progresses and his "madness" grows. Definitely check out the Special Edition DVD as it has a great commentary by the kids cast and a documentary with Gene Wilder throwing in a few tidbits of his own. The music-I've loved every song for years-especially "Pure Imagination"-except for "Cheer Up Charlie". I go back and forth and how much I like it or not, but it just doesn't seem to hold up as well as the rest in the film or the soundtrack. I can't say enough about how much I love this film. If you've never seen it-or just haven't in a while. View it again-you really see different elements with each viewing. Worship worship.
In a similar vein, check out Gene Wilder playing the fox in the movie The Little Prince. Another spooky adult movie disguised as a kid's movie. Not to mention the mayhem he induces in Young Frankenstein | |
