Barry Manillow..He's Retiring? Then ? Why Do People Think He's GAY? Is it Because he played with Bette Midler at Gay Bathhouses? Was there any REAL PROOF he WAS GAY?

I'm probably sticking my neck out too far with this confession, but...
I just bought my tickets this morning to see Barry when he comes to Chicago in October. It will be my NINTH time seeing him live (more than Prince, though not by choice...I would gladly see Prince live whenever he's here and have done so this year). At any rate, I think Manilow is PHENOMINAL. He's high on my list of favorite artists, which is, of course, led by the Purple One. The thing is, though, you can't compare what he's doing to what Prince is doing (and of course someone here is going to want to make those ridiculous comparisons). I look at Manilow's craft as being "song interpretation." It's more of a theatrical performance...he doesn't have to "write the songs" to perform them as though he lives in them. And by the way, he HAS written quite a lot of his best work, just not all of it. It's not like he's some Celine Dion or someone who ONLY sings and doesn't write. Either way, Manilow is a heartbreakingly-beautiful pianist and true showman live in concert. His songs are lite-rock but beautiful in lyric and instrumentation. I'm not sure if he's retiring or not, but I just dropped $400 on tickets so that, in the even that he does, I won't miss his last Chicago show. As for whether or not he's gay, I don't really care. As for why people THINK he is, my response would be that he's been playing with the ladies in concert for decades and has never addressed his sexuality to anyone, and is NEVER seen with or reported by tabloids as being with ANYONE, male OR female (which fuels the fire, of course). Prince and Manilow...two of my favorites...two completely different artists. Don't hate me because of my diverse interests! Ha ha... Keith/Kacey

Songs like "Could It Be Magic","Copacabana","Ships","This One's For You" and "I Can't Smile Without You" mean so much more to me than the crap we hear on the radio these days. And I ain't afraid to admit it,lol.

Come on out of that closet David! Barry is definately one of my guilty pleasures! Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

Perfect!!Although,I have hummed a few of his songs before and "Copa Cabana" is cool at a '70's club.Barry screams "gay".No biggie,though. "I'm a pig..so,magic elixir I swill"

Is he gay? Probably. Will he ever come out publicly? Probably not. Have you seen how many screaming women (real women...) flock to his concerts? It's scurry how oblivious they are.
Nonetheless, I think there's no shame in admitting a liking for Manilow. He performed, arranged, and/or wrote some great, catchy songs and some really sweet ballads. Yeah, he's cheesy as all hell, but he did some classics. I think Weekend in New England is his best along with Looks Like We Made It, This One's for You and Even Now. My co-favorite is Could It Be Magic. Of course, a base in Chopin didn't hurt that one. As much as I like his version, I think Donna Summer outdid him on his own song. Maybe old Barr shoulda moaned a little more to make it work for him.

I agree,Donna's version of that song is incredible. In recent years,Donna and Barry appeared onstage together, singing that song as a duet. [This message was edited Wed Aug 18 4:04:50 2004 by DavidEye]

GO BARRY! GO BARRY! GO BARRY!
"Tryin' to Get the Feeling Again" is one of the best songs EVER! The ORG - the only place where you can be called a wigger, a racist and a Nazi and be banned for defending yourself. It's so hard being white nowadays...

I think people think he is gay because he sings mostly ballads. A ballad singer gets a weak stereotype and people love to stereotype gay people as weak. That is what first attracted me to Prince. People have always thought Prince was gay because Prince had a feminine look but his attitude and music tore down that weak stereotypical image of gays and shoved it up prejudiced people's asses. Andy is a four letter word.

I have his box set and it comes with a bonus VHS tape of his 70s performances. Many of the clips are taken from his TV special (back then,EVERY successful artist had a TV special...lol),and the performance of "Copacabana" must be seen to be believed,it is totally over-the-top,very gaudy and extreme...lol...his female backup singers are wearing these amazing dresses, and the whole performance is just so tacky....but in a cool "crazy-70s" type of way,if you know what I mean.
