5 - a great album! Just listening to Lenny Kravitz's "5" album.
I bought this a few months back but haven't given it much listening time till now...the tracks "Black Velveteen", "I Belong To You", "If You Can't Say No and "Thinking Of You" are all top notch songs, in fact the whole album is probably his most imaginative in terms of style and production and also his singing is in fine form. Who else digs this album and what are your favourite Lenny albums? ...consider this a "Show Your Love For Lenny" thread! . [This message was edited Thu Jul 29 5:15:42 2004 by mrdespues]

I wholeheartedly agree. As much as I dig AreYou Gonna Go My Way, I truly love 5 as well. My wife and I have had some interesting discussions regarding the lyrics of Black Velveteen. Such a cool song. I think the only song on the album that I don't particularly care for is Supersoulfighter. The album as a whole has a free, kind of "let's try this" or "let's try that" feel. In fact, this is the album that got me into Lenny in the first place. It was after listening to 5 that I went back and bought let Love Rule and so on.

The thing I didn't appreciate when it came out was it's depth but that's because I didn't have this piece-of-shit called "Baptism" to compare it to.

5 was also my first Lenny album. I loved it at the time and it's still probably my favourite (it's tough to choose between 5 and Mama Said) but after I heard some of Lenny's influences (particularly Sly & The Family Stone) I was a little disappointed with the album. It's great but I can't help wishing Lenny was more original. I also agree with the person who said that this was Lenny's last great album. I found the Lenny album and what I've heard of Baptism quite a let down.

I am shocked, hehehe.
I have been Lenny fan for a long time and I thought 5 was this glam album that sounded off somehow. Together with the album that followed they are my least fave albums. I was playing my fave Lenny track yesterday; Is It Me Is It You?, a R&R=dead b-side.

A very great album, maybe in Lenny's top 3. I listened 2 it properly the other day after not hearing it in years and Black Velveteen is arguably the most original Lenny song EVER!
5 was a commercial peak, followed it up with Lenny, which although it had many good songs (battlefield, If I could, Bank Robber, Pay 2 Play) Much of it was Lenny treading water. I like Baptism the songs are great I just wish that he was a lil bit more inventive in his production and instrumentation. Every ballad has that slow plodding drum sound. Lenny and Baptism were engineered by Henry Hirsch, his longtime collaborator, 5 was seen by some other dude his name escapes me at the minute. I think Lenny should do an album 50-50 or 100% with the other cat! The Force is with me Luminous beings are we...not this crude matter.
Is this 2morrow or just the END of time? The Funk will always b with u "I've got a face, not just my race, Bang Bang I've got you babe!"

I like Lenny, but I never liked this album, although I love "If You Cant Say No." I simply don't think Lenny is a great songwriter, and it's evident on this album. Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

I had a summer long project the year this came out where I was isolated in a room all day, every day for months. This album helped me get through that damn project!! I listened to it every day, over & over & over. Great album, I can't call it my favorite for sure but it's certainly up there with Circus & Are You Gonna Go My Way. Here's my faves from it:
