checkin' out Jean Paul Bourelly anybody checkin' out Jean Paul Bourelly?
aka The "Jungle Cowboy", His raw, powerful guitar and voice often get comparisons to Jimi Hendrix , but his sound is more like Jimi jamming with Miles Davis, James Brown, Tribe Called Quest, John Coltrane and Muddy Waters all in the same room! (check out the original version of the song "Toxic U Love" from his album "Saints and Sinners,"Supernatural" from the album,"Trippin", "Restless Wave" and "Welfare Flower Child", and "Song Of Allah" from "Blackadelic Blu" and his version of "Electric Ladyland" from his album,"Tribute to Hendrix") Born in Chicago 1960 to Hatian immigrant parents, the guitar virtuoso calls his music "jazz without borders", or "blue wave". He embarked on a solo career after playing for years with jazz stars like Cassandra Wilson, Elvin Jones, Pharaoh Sanders, Archie Shepp and Miles Davis. Bourelly originally studied classical, and took piano and drum lessons, and at the early age of 14 began performing in public. A turning point came when he heard Jimi Hendrix , Santana. He at once decided to change instruments. "The first time I held a guitar, blues came out," he recalls. With his basic classical training, his inspiration from the blues and his already notable technical prowess, which he wished to increase, Bourelly moved in 1979 to New York. Only a year later he played an outstanding role in Muhal Richard Abram's Blues Forever, which became the Downbeat "Album of the Year". He then worked together with the drummer Elvin Jones, as well as saxophonist Pharaoh Sanders. Soon Bourelly was hired to make recordings like That Old Feeling (Blue Note) and Cassandra Wilson's Point of View. impressed by Bourelly's musical gift, Miles Davis hired him for Amandla. Bourelly was also took part in various musical movements like the Black Rock Coalition and the blossoming M-Base scene. Bourelly became known for his futuristic, funky and loudly distorted guitar music. His songs appeared on albums together with Robin Trower (Guitar Speak II.I.R.S.) and Rod Stewart (Hendrix Tribute France), and he shared the stage with Vernon Reid, Jack Bruce and Terry Bozzio in Stuttgart, and elsewhere with the European rock band Matalex. Bourelly's group, the Blue Wave Bandits has included musicians like(Kundalini) Mark Batson (from Get Set V.O.P.), Darryl Jones (Rolling Stones and Sting), Melvin Gibbs (from the Henry Rollins' Band), Reggie Washington, and the drummers Alfredo Alias, Will Calhoun (from Living Colour), Rodney Holmes(Santana) and Cindy Blackman(Lenny Kravitz) . With this line-up, he plays through jazz, rock, hip hop, funk and of course blues, or rather jungle world blues. he is also a formed the Hatian/American group Ayibobo, and in 1997, he also formed the band Boom Bop, with artists like Senegalese singer Abdourahmane Diop. the band plays "modern music with roots", exploring musical languages and the lost link between West Africa and the present experiences of Blacks in America. My favorite Bouelly tracks: Rock The Cathartic Spirits Toxic You Love Stranger Supernatural The Black Triumvirate The Restless Wave Welfare Flower Child Got To Be Able To Know Song Of Allah Runaway Train Hope Badriia Electric Ladyland Neo-Boogaloo Consciousness Nu Breed Culture Groove With Me Rumble In The Jungle [This message was edited Fri Jul 30 3:18:20 2004 by paligap] " I've got six things on my mind --you're no longer one of them." - Paddy McAloon, Prefab Sprout

Actually, his version of "Electric Ladyland" is one of the few Hendrix tributes that actually does justice to the original... " I've got six things on my mind --you're no longer one of them." - Paddy McAloon, Prefab Sprout
