What did you thought or how did you react when you first find out that Teena Marie was white As for me, I thought she was a white woman trapped in a black woman's body. That sista's got soul.
At first I couldn't believe it until I saw one of her album covers. It was then I knew that she'll be around for a long time cause she has a beautiful voice. Not to mention she's a hell of a singer too. Not bad for a white chick!

Teena lived as a BLACK WOMAN!
She grew up in black venice LA. Seen the same bullshit sistas seen, ate from their same table, went to their same church and drew her pain in her music exactly like they did. She maybe a white broad to ya'll but 2 me she's a sista at heart

I don't know that that's true, at least I should hope not. She may be soulful, but she's as white as ever.

I wasn't as shocked about Teena Marie as I was about Color Me Badd. I stopped listening to them because I had a hunch they were faking the funk all along.

Can't remember if I was shocked. Teena's definitely got pedigree! Actually, I was more shocked to learn that actress Debi Mazar was all about 80s hip hop culture. But, when I think about how she's been in a few Spike Lee Jointz and I've seen her on that UPN (or is it WB?) show produced by Will Smith and Jada Pinkett it adds up. She's got pedigree too!

I am not taína. Taíno is in me, but there is no way back. I am not european. Europe lives in me, but I have no home there. I am new. History made me. My first language was spanglish. And I am

When I first saw a picture of Teena Marie and saw that she was white, I was shocked as hell. I said "This is one bad ass bitch!" Being a white funk lover myself, I immediately fell in love with her. Andy is a four letter word.

I think I understand everything you're saying on this post... but the "not bad for a white chick" statement.... mmm, kinda rubs me the wrong way. White people, hell - people of all colors have performed soul or R&B styled music since the beginning...and some have done it very well! It's what's in your heart. |

I saw Teena at the Crenshaw Mall in L.A...no joke!! Teena has always been a part of the black community. Her God mother is black, she has a bi racial child and Harlepolis is correct about where Teena lived. but to answer the question, I think we always knew she was white....I think we were more surprised when she crossed over and pop America thought she was some new "white soulful singing sensation".
