You probably know "Touch of Grey" since it was their most commercially successful song. I think it's from 1987. Even had a video on mtv for it.

I've been putting off The Dead forever now, but not because I'm not interested. They're a phenomenon when you get right down to it. They've survived for over almost 4 decades by basically their live gigs that always sell out, because they've never really had a huge hit album based on the charts. Their fans might be the most loyal out there.

I do remember hearing a track by Jerry Garcia and Ornette Coleman that I dug a lot, but I can't remember the name of it.

Are you serious? Those are two names I would have never put together.

I don't mind jam bands, I just can't stand all of those smelly, patchouli wearing, dirty feet having, dancing around in circles, people that show up at their shows! mad

Yeah, actually that name sounds familiar. (Touch of Grey) I'd probably know it if I heard it. I just never really knew anyone who was into them, and I never sought out their music myself, so I really haven't a clue whether I'd like them or not.

Wait, I knew one person who liked them: my cousin, and she would follow them all over the U.S. wherever they toured. lol

My favorite groups linked to the Jam Band Scene are:

Aquarium Rescue Unit
Jimmy Herring - Guitar
Oteil Burbridge - Bass
Kofi Burbridge - Keys & Flute
Jeff Sipe/Sean O'Rourke - Drums
Paul Henson - Vocals

Don't be put off by IAPW's ugly cover , inside the disc there's much to discover.
Cross-pollinate Tower Of Power with Return To Forever and that'd be the best description I can come up with at the moment to describe the groovy outside funky fusion sound of ARU.
Haven't dug into The Calling yet but the samples I heard made me put it on my "To Get" list.

Soulive
Neal Evans - B3, keys, lefthand bass
Alan Evans - Drums
Eric Krasno - Guitar

Imagine the classic organ trio sound (Jimmy Smith, Jack McDuff) played by younger cats with funk and hip-hop (the good stuff) tendencies. They groove hard.

If the Jam Band scene is personified by The Grateful Dead and Phish, ARU and Soulive sound nothing like either one of them. I steered clear of the scene because that was my impression. However after having discovered these 2 bands it reminded me of the wide open playlists of early FM rock. Where you could hear Jimi Hendrix followed by Richie Havens followed by Arthur Brown followed by Joni Mitchell followed by Alice Cooper followed by The Grateful Dead.

In other words, its sounds like a good thing.

UptownDeb

I didn't realize the Black Crowes were a jam band. I've been meaning to pick up their greatest hits comp.

Jam bands play for hours on end right? Gosh, at some point I would get tired. I hate saying this but, when I saw Prince at MSG in 1996 he had Chaka and Larry in tow. After a while it was just a bit much. neutral

It's true. During his Prime Time group era.
The group had 2 of everything (guitar, bass, drums).
The Virgin Beauty album had Garcia as a guitarist on a few cuts.
