"Love's In Need Of Love Today"

One of Stevie's greatest moments. The passion that he expresses at the end of that song is amazing...
"London, i've adopted a name that has no pronounciation.... is that cool with you?"

"YEAH!!!"

"Yeah, well then fuck those other fools!"

Stevie is still the ORIGINAL "Musical Genius"..!
Too bad the "gotta-have-a-hit" mentality of today's "R&B" music keeps real geniuses like Stevie in the background..

my 2 favorite up-tempo songs are:

"don't you worry 'bout a thing"
&
"do I do"

my 2 favorite slow songs are:

"smile please"
&
"send one your love"

hell, let's make it an "even" 5:

"AS" that song is GREAT..
I've been trying to learn all the lyrics for YEARS!
smile

"did you know that true love asks for nothing? her acceptance is the way we pay.."
I'll see you tonight..
in ALL MY DREAMS..

Finally a thread on the man. biggrin . My favorite Stevie songs are many but off the top of my head there's definitely Happier than the morning Sun (beautiful, melancholy), Summer Soft, As, Another Star, Visions, SuperWoman, Bird of Beauty, That Girl, Golden Lady, Blame it on the Sun, and You and I.
His greatest album is The Secret Life of Plants. It's not accessible to everyone, but once you're into it it's just the most powerful experience you'll get on record, cd, or tape (my first reaction was "what is this crap?" lol ). It's very "organic" and blows any other album I can think of completely out of the water. This was the pinnacle of his genius and of course because it wasn't very marketable he was constantly under pressure thereafter to come back down to earth where the record companies could sell his music. Like you all said though he couldn't go wrong in the 70's just like P in the 80's.
If I had to pick a favorite artist it would be Stevie though I'd hate to give up P, Jimi, Dylan, Badu and Difranco (I know only time will tel

This is just plain torture for a fan who puts Stevie Wonder at #1 on his list. Pick just one? Dang! Help?!
I have to admit that "Love's In Need of Love Today'' popped into my mind first before reading the whole question.
It's vintage Stevie - heartfelt lyrics, beautiful music. The opening just grabs you like few other songs ever:

"Good morn or evening friends,
Here's your friendly announcer

I have serious news to pass on to everybody
What I'm about to say
could mean the world's disaster
Could change your joy and laughter
to tears and pain.
It's that love's in need of love today.''

Now tell me, who's gone hit the skip button after hearing that! Come on, now, come on.

Guess I know what I'll playing before I go to bed tonight.
Thanks.

Peace

Stevie...we need another "wonder"ful album. It's nice 2 know after all these years, people r still in awe of his work. I'd like 2 see him back in the songwriting mode 4 political statements and of course his views on love...

"there's a ribbon in the sky for our love..."

"Happy birthday".... ever since "Hotter than july" was published my family has been playing this song on every birthday... instead of singing the usual" Happy birthday to you..." we are all singing and dancing on this song... including my granny, my uncles and aunts, my friends.... it has become a real tradition for us and the more I think about it the more I realize I couldn't really do without it....

Given such an impressive body of work, this is a very difficult question to answer.

'Too High' -- Possibly my favorite Stevie Wonder song. It may have been my introduction to the Fender Rhodes and the Moog synthesizer as a child. The background vocal arrangements complement the track perfectly. It (as well as the entire Innervisions album) continues to affect me profoundly to this day.

Honorable mentions:
'Rocket Love' (Maxwell needs to cover this song)
'That Girl'
'Golden Lady'
'Knocks Me Off My Feet'
'If It's Magic'

This is a very warm thread, love it...

Read a lot of what ppl have written b4 me and Im sayin 'Yeah, that 1...God, yeah, that 1' - there are so many, but the one that is special to me, is Sir Duke. I remember that being on the radio when I was very young and I always feel lifted by it whenever I hear it. I used to groove to it with my Dad, s'pose thats why it is special. In fact, I think that's the only song I can think of where we had a connection through music. In my mind, this song takes me right back to when I felt very warm and very loved by my Dad. Had struggles with him since, so through Stevies music, I have a window to access good memories biggrin

Awww, Therapy. How sad. You almost made me cry with what you said. I have a 3 year old daughter and we are always jammin' together. I hope when she grows up she remembers it and has special, warm feelings and memories. I know it will get harder as she grows older so I'm trying to enjoy time with her now while she is still my little girl. Okay, now I am crying...
Speaking of Stevie, my daughter and I jam to "Isn't She Lovely" which she calls the "baby song" because it starts off with a crying baby...
I hope you make amends with your father. Listen to the song "These Three Words" by Stevie Wonder.

Great thread ... I will say that it is VERY hard for to choose just one song, or even one album for that matter.

Here are a couple of favourites.

  • "Village Ghetto Land" from "Songs in the Key of Life"
  • "Joy Inside my Tears" from "Songs in the Key of Life"
  • "All in Love is Fair" from "Innervisions"
  • "Blame it on the Sun" from "Talking Book"
  • "Seems So Long" from "Music of My Mind"
  • "Evil" from "Music of My Mind"
  • "I'm New" from "Conversation Peace"

Come to think of it, the whole album "Conversation Peace" is brilliant, and often neglected. "Secret Life of Plants" is superb too.

Stevie has made some truly incredible music. Prince & Stevie should work together again one of these days.

Those are some great songs you listed!!! Whenever I hear the song "Golden Lady",I get chills, for some reason...lol...that song just drives me crazy!! I love that little piano intro, then the music kicks in,and I get totally "lost" in that song.Sheer brilliance!! "Rocket Love" is also a gem,but I can't imagine ANYONE tackling a Stevie song, not even Maxwell:)
