Or possibly Ebony & Ivory. eek

Hey,you did NOT see me place "I Just Called To Say I Love You" on my list...lol...I don't hate the song, but it's not one of his best. Here's an interesting tidbit....that song was actually written by 1976,wonder if it was an outtake from 'Songs In The Key Of Life'?

As for "Ebony and Ivory",I do like the song. Not one of my favorites, though. It's funny though,I remember seeing the video on MTV,one of the few times that a Stevie Wonder video was shown on that channel.(btw,I think that a few of Stevie's songs are McCartney-influenced and vice versa).

YES indeed Lennon and McCartney play a big influence in how Stevie forms metaphor in his lyrics and in how the music is heightens emphasis on choice syllables. Shows in PRince too!

IN honor o f this I was jammin' ORIGNINAL MUSIQUARIUM 1 while gardening. Shit was jammin'; had me sangin' all out-of tune and LOUD!!! lol

On another message board,we once got into a huge debate about "What is Stevie's best album?".Amazingly, some people said that they thought 'Songs In The Key of Life' is "too bloated, too pretentious, too eclectic".Can you believe that?? Imo,that album is one of the FEW 2-record sets that actually holds my attention all the way through (Prince's '1999' is another one).

Btw,does anyone know if/when Stevie's 'Journey Through The Secret Life of Plants' album will get remastered?

Why Stevie??...he appears 2 have affected many of us here on the .org. So, why not search ourselves and list a tribute of some sort 2 his writings..and how it moved u. Why only one??? 'Cuz there'e truly so many...it'd b so hard 2 get deep on all of them. Go ahead, pick one and spill ur soul on y it hit u so hard...b it happy or sad, political or not...u decide, and tell us.

Here's mine:

"Love's In Need Of Love Today"

I was very young when this came out, it was released in 1976 in the "Songs In The Key Of Life" album, when I was only 11 years old! Still, when I did "find" Stevie, I was enthralled with this song. As it pleads 2 everyone 2 choose love over hatred, it stirred my soul. I used 2 perform it live when I was doin' that kinda thing...and it always moved the audience. I always told myself, if I ever got the chance 2 sing a duet with Stevie (sometimes he pulls peeps out of the audience at his concerts 2 do just that), I would choose this one.

If u listen 2 it now, the sincere meaning of the words r as prevalent 2day as it was in '76...maybe more so.

"The force of evil plans
To make you it's possession
And it will if we let it
Destroy everybody
We all must take
Precautionary measures
If love and peace you treasure
Then you'll hear me when I say
Oh that Love's In Need Of Love Today..."

'nuff said.

DAVIDEYE, Motown were scheduled to digitally remaster and release Journey Through The Secret Life Of Plants in 2000 when they released those other 70's Stevie classic albums. However, it never appeared. They were also scheduled to give 24-bit digital remaster treatments to Stevie's 80's releases, but heard nothing else after the year 2000.

Yeah, I can believe that. I don't think it's "too eclectic" though. In the hands of the masters I don't think anything can be too eclectic.

Bloated maybe, in that some songs could have been edited especially "Isn't She Lovely?". When it first came out it was heralded as his most complete and unfettered expression. HE essentially had carte blanche for propping up MOTOWN (ok Commodores helped a bit ) and making it it a major profit in the mid-70s! Plus there was a flood of analog-based sysntehsizers that came out at that time. I remember he and Herbie Hancock got the very first of OBEHEIM's DREAM MACHINE for use on their current projects (Herbie did Mr HANDS) . Stevie did this for the fans: if you bought the vinyl you got a little 45 with EBONY EYES SATURN and ALL DAY SUCKER another tune that was a harmonica instrumental. It was perfect just the way it was presented!

Might have been too eclectic for the pop charts cuz I only saw I WISH as a hit. This album has deep "album cuts". You don't feel it fully unless you play the whole thing all the way thru at least once (a year!).

Stevie is right next to Prince in my favorites, even though "skeletons" was the last song I liked of his. I think this is thanks to my mom who played Talking Book until it scratched like crazy when I was real young.

I like most of the 70's stuff but my favorites are:

TOO HIGH
BLACK MAN (PRINCE THIS IS HOW TO EDUCATE AND NOT PREACH!)
LOVE HAVIN YOU AROUND
GOLDEN LADY
MAYBE YOUR BABY (RAY PARKER, JR ON GUITAR!)
DON'T YOU WORRY BOUT A THING
YOU HAVEN'T DONE NOTHIN (WITH THE JACKSON 5!)

OK that's enough, but I like everything up to when Stevie started using computers and stopped using real instruments with his moog synth.

You're absoultely right DMSR. That's where Stevie went off at. It's hard to listen to his 80's records, even though they have flashes of brillance on them. Too much technology and not enough soul!!!!! He said in an interview back in 1998 that his next two album projects will be a gospel album and a JAZZ album. I hoped he hasn't had a change of heart. I would really love to hear a Stevie Wonder jazz album because I really think Stevie could bring something to the table as far as the jazz idiom is concerned. Innervisions was a record with serious jazz backdrops. And we all know what Stevie could do on a gospel record. He made a duet with gospel group called The Williams Brothers in 1998 on a song call "Too Close". WOW!!!! Amazing vocals from Stevie on that track. That song was better than 90% of all the stuff he did in ther 80's!!!

BTW PFUNKJAZZ, I prefer the 45 rpm single version of "You Are The Sunshine Of My Life" as that verison has the horn riffs on it.

What did you guys think of Stevie's 1991 'Jungle Fever' soundtrack? I think it's brilliant. The funny thing is,my favorite song on that album is the one song that Stevie doesn't sing lead vocals on...."If She Breaks Your Heart",which is sung by Kimberly Brewer, his girlfriend at the time.

***If you don't already have it,go out and pick up his 1995 live album 'Natural Wonder'.It's simply incredible!! (ask King Sausage,he and I discuss Stevie ALL the time, and he lists this as one of his favorites, too).

JUNGLE FEVER was a good record. A lot of those songs sounded like stuff he had lying around in his vaults. Still great material. These Three Words, Queen In The Black and Fun Day...especially Fun Day is vintage Stevie. "Make Sure You're Sure" is great Stevie as well. Again, this was a good album because Stevie used live instrumentations on most of the tracks. I like the way Stevie flows in the background behind the female vocalist.

Kinda of hyperbolic Dave. It's enjoyable, but I don't think brililant is the word I woud use. As BROTHER 915 says it does sound like leftovers, but any STEVIE is fine with me. (I think IN SQUARE CIRCLE is better than most give it credit). That NATURAL WONDER is also "just ok". I have some Stevie boots from different periods and I find I like him better with an array of electronic keys instead of full orchestraion

I have "Natural Wonder", it's a concert album and it's excellent!

One song u get that u don't normally know of is the song "Stay Gold" from the movie The Outsiders. It's brilliant.

Another is a most incredible version of "Ribbon In The Sky" with the uptempo ending and the toying with the audience...so sweet!

I've seen him live 4 times...I never tire of his show.

God bless u Stevie.

Actually a lot of Stevie's old songs are gospel-inflected vocally even if not lyrically really gospel songs. Gospel music is part of the foundation of Soul music.

What do you guys think of Stevie's 1980 album 'Hotter Than July'? I absolutely LOVE the song "Rocket Love".That's a classic! Other great tracks on this album include "As If You Read My Mind","All I Do",and "I Ain't Gonna Stand For It",which features background vocals by The Gap Band(lead singer Charlie Wilson was obviously inspired a great deal by Stevie).

Other great Stevie songs from the 80s...

***"Do I Do"(1982)---This is a LONG track,clocking in at about 10 minutes,I think.But it's funky,so who cares?smile

***"That Girl"(1982)---Classic early 80s' soul music.

***"I Love You Too Much"(1985)---Forget about "Part Time Lover",this was the REAL gem from the 'In Square Circle' album!

***"Land Of La La"(1985)---A catchy tale of two young teens who run away from home, and wind up in the rough streets of L.A.

***"You Will Know"(1987)---A gorgeous ballad that ranks up there with his best 70s' work.

***"Get It"(duet with Michael Jackson)(1987)---Michael Jackson's own 'Bad' album also included a duet with Stevie, the rather lame "Just Good Friends".However,Stevie's album 'Characters' included a kickass duet,"Get It",which is catchy and alot of fun.

What did you guys think of Stevie's 4-CD box set 'At The Close Of A Century',which came out a few years ago? While I enjoy having all the "hits" in one place,I was disappointed that it didn't contain any rare tracks, live recordings,or outtakes. It's obvious that it was compiled by the Motown/Universal folks, with very little input, advice and assistance from Stevie. It is well-known that Stevie has TONS of unreleased recordings in his vaults, but I guess he's not yet ready to part with any of it.

Still, much props to Motown/Universal for re-mastering all of the 70s' Stevie albums. The sound quality is superb! I got the numbered,limited-edition digi-pak CDs,which are wonderful.I can't wait til they get around to re-mastering the 'Journey Through The Secret Life Of Plants' CD (1978).

I wonder when Stevie will finally release a new album.A year or so ago,I heard that he was planning to release a new CD in September 2001.

Some people feel that "Hotter Than July" is Stevie's last great consistent album. It's definitely a winner.May not be his best, but better than a lot of people's best. Some of my favorite 80's Stevie.....

***As If You Could Read My Mind- This song sounded like it could have been on SITKOL album. Great time changes and melodic structure.... as Stevie can only execute!!!!Great groove.

***All I Do- Michael Jackson sings background on this one. Great melody again, great lyrics from Stevie. This is an old school R*B staple.

***Lately- Classic Stevie ballad. Oh... Jodeci gave it their best shot but Stevie's take is surely more definitive. You got to come correct(REAL CORRECT) if you're gonna cover a Stevie track.

***Cash In Your Face- Brillant Stevie lyrics which depicts a man and his wife as subjects of racial discrimination. "You might have the cash, but you can not cash in your face...we don't want your kind living in here"

***All the new songs on Original Musiquarium Vol 1.....That Girl, Do I Do, Ribbon In The Sky and the great vietnam-inflected "Front Line" is grade A Stevie. These great songs along with Stevie's vintage 70's material make this greatest hits album a sure shot for neophytes just getting into to Stevie or looking for a place to begin their collection. Even though this is a good overview of Stevie's 70's music, it barely scratches the surface.

***Love Light In Flight- Great song from the The Woman In Red sountrack. This second single was a lot better looking back in retrospect than "I Just Called To Say I Love You".

***Moments Aren't Moments- I love Stevie's synth and drum programming on this track. Melodically and harmonically speaking, this music is great and intriguing.

***Part Time Lover- The Adultery Song. Great lyrics by Stevie and great song to snap your fingers too. This would be Stevie's last song to go to number #1 on Billboard's pop singles chart.

***Whereabouts-Once again Stevie proves why he is one of the masters of melody. AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME. This may be my favorite song off "In Sqaure Circle".

MORE TO FOLLOW!!!!

Even tho the movie, "Jungle Fever" was a commercial flop, the album was above par. Except 4 the title track, it was a beautiful attempt of capturing a controversial topic. My faves:

Make Sure Your Sure

Chemical Love

Fun Day (remember the video? Stevie "driving" around in a car on a beautiful day in L.A.)

Can't wait 4 the new material 2 arrive!!!

(*doing best Sophia "Golden Girls" Petrillo imitation*):
*ahem*

Picture it: suburban Maryland. 1989. Musically obsessed teenager goes to evening musical play at his high school. Notices that the dancing in the first act is to a Stevie Wonder song. Notices that the program lists all songs as Wonder compositions. Days later, said teen finds "Innervisions" at his neighborhood library. It has all the songs from that play, even "He's Misstra Know-It-All," which he'd practically swooned at. 'Surely Stevie can't top the songs on here, not even All in Love is Fair.' And one day, driving to the supermarket, he here's this myster Stevie gem. Something that made him want to pull over and weep. Something about "I'll love you ... forever..." Couldn't grasp the words, was just awestruck by the mastery, how it morphed from sheer beauty to a funky vamp. He'd kick himself, as the years wore on, for not paying better attention...

Years later, while working in Arizona, summer 1996, he discovers the bliss that is Fulfillingness' First Finale. My gosh. The whole thing. Lovely. Bliss. Surely, it can't get any better can it? Can it???? Still looking for that song...

Finds the double CD Songs in the Key of Life in a Virginia pawn shop for $6! Thinks he's struck gold. Maybe "As" is that song he heard years ago... Nope. It's the jam, but no... The search continues...

Fast forward about 2 years later. After finally following his music buddy's advice, said man breaks down and buys Talking Book, hoping track 10 is the song that cemented his love for Steveland Morris' writing. It is... Butter.... Stevie's songs are on another level (well the phat ones from the 1970s, at least). For me, there's only one SW song that resonates with me so completely. Call me a foolish romantic (and a long-winded one at that), but this song keeps me hopeful -- and I love its inclusion in the High Fidelity soundtrack. I sang along in that darkened theater, in a reverential whisper.

I BELIEVE (WHEN I FALL IN LOVE IT WILL BE FOREVER)

Shattered dreams, worthless years,
Here am I encased inside a hollow shell,
Life began, then was done,
Now I stare into a cold and empty well

The many sounds that meet our ears
the sights our eyes behold,
Will open up our merging hearts,
And feed our empty souls

I believe when I fall in love with you it will be forever,
I believe when I fall in love this time it will be forever

Without despair we will share,
And the joys of caring will not be replaced,
What has been must never end
And with the strength we have won't be erased
When the truths of love are planted firm,
They won't be hard to find,
And the words of love I speak to you
will echo in your mind

I believe when I fall in love with you it will be forever,
I believe when I fall in love this time it will be forever

I believe when I fall in love with you it will be forever,
I believe when I fall in love with you it will be forever

I'm so glad that I found someone to believe in again,
I'm so glad that I found someone to believe in again

God surely answered my prayer,
God surely answered by prayer,
You know God surely answered my prayer,
You know God surely answered my prayer,
God always will answer your prayers,
Believe in one who will answer my prayer,
Thank you God

Come on, let's fall in love,
You're the woman I've been waiting for,
Come on, let's fall in love,
You're the girl that I really adore,
Come on, let's fall in love...etc

You can't go far wrong with most of his 70's stuff. I would have to go for "Golden Lady" - absolutely gorgeous.

By the way, can anyone tell me if "The Secret Life of Plants" CD is any good? It's one of the few Stevie CD's I have not heard.
