Old School Date Rape Songs I am a big fan of Luther's music, especially his covers. But there is one song of his that I find quite disturbing, "Love Won't Let Me Wait." On the surface, this song seems quite romantic, but if you actually listen to the lyrics, they sound a bit date-rapish to me. I'll post them here for your convenience:
"Love Won't Let Me Wait" I need to have you next to me in more ways than one And I refuse to leave till I see the mornin' sun The time is right, you hold me tight And love's got me high Please tell me, 'Yes' and don't say, 'No' Honey, not tonight Move a little close to me, you owe it to yourself And I will selfishly take a little for myself And it's because of you That love won't let me wait Yeah, yeah The time is right, turn down the lights And take my hand, ooh, ooh, yeah We'll take a flight and spend the night In Wonderland And I need to have you next to me in more ways than one And I refuse to leave till I see the mornin' sun Creep through your window pane Because love won't let me wait Not another minute Ooh...ooh...ooh...yeah...yeah... And I need your love so desperately and only you can set me free When I make to you, we'll explode in ecstasy And I won't take the blame That love won't let me wait ....blah blah so on and so forth. Another song that comes to mind is the Ojay's "Let Me Make Love to You." As with the Luther song, it seems romantic and lovely on the surface. But at the same time, it has some forceful undertones. I can't find those lyrics...maybe someone else will post them, but the part that I am referring to is "I won't stop 'til you ask me to, tell me to, beg me to." Now, does one have to ask, tell, and beg? Do they have to be in that order? Now before somebody blasts me for speaking ill of either Luther or the O'Jays, i just would like to say that you should take this post with a grain of salt. It is not *entirely* serious. Surely Luther, nor the O'Jays would have released songs that promote illegal behavior. And for the record, I do like both songs. So, the question is are these songs *date-rapey*? Can you think of any other *romantic* songs that go a bit astray? The message you're about to hear is not meant for transmission

Don't really see the date-rape connection.
You could probably make that argument with quite a few romantic tunes but you'd have to really stretch. Trivia: "Love Won't Let Me Wait" was originally done by Major Harris (1975). I like Major's version much better. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...rmusic.htm "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. C'mon y'all."

Also, Luther's version tends to get tons more airplay, so I thought peeps would be more familiar with that one. Sorry, HotThang but I don't see the connection either. I got an old school ass-whipping song though!
Thin Line Between Love And Hate The Persuaders It's a thin line, it's 5 o'clock in the morning And I'm just getting in, I knock on the door A voice sweet and low says, who is it? She opens up the door and lets me in Never do she once say, sir, where have you been? No, she says, are you hungry? Are you hungry, honey? Did you eat yet? Let me hang up your coat, your coat, your coat And the woman tells me, pass me your hat too All the time she smiles, never once raises her voice It's 5 o'clock in the morning 1-It's a thin line between love and hate.. 2-The sweetest woman in the world Can be the meanest woman in the world If you make her that way, you keep on hurting her She keeps being quiet She might be holding something inside That really really hurt you one day Here I am laying in the hospital Bandaged from feet to head Ya see I'm in the state of shock Just that much from being dead I didn't think my woman could do something like this to me I didn't think she had the nerve, so here I am I guess action speaks louder than words (repeat 1, 2, 1) It's a thin line, between love and hate It's a thin line... Oh, I've a couple of songs with lyrics that bother me a little. Gap Band's "I DON'T BELIEVE YOU WANT TO GET UP AND DANCE (Oops Upside Your Head)": Jack and Jill went up the hill to have a little fun Stupid Jill forgot her pill, and now they have a son. Why she gotta be stupid?! Why can't Jack wear a condom?! I love the Isley Brothers but there's a line in "That Lady" that makes me say "WTF?" I would dance upon a string. Any gift she'd want, I'd bring. I would give her anything, If she would just do what I say.

It's not date-rapish but when Teddy used to shout "Turn 'em off!" the ladies used to get persuaded.
They were playing his record (remember those?) in the record store and a lady took off all her clothes. S***, I bought TWO of his albums that day! One to set the mood and one as a spare. YEAH! YES!

Speaking of Teddy, there's something kind of aggressive about how he says, "come here woman" in "Close the Door." Oh, you gotta admit Rick James' "Give It to Me Baby" has got the potential for date rape written all over it. I mean, he comes home high! When I came home last night You wouldn't make love to me You went fast asleep You wouldn't even talk to me You say I'm so crazy Coming home intoxicated I say just want to love you, I just wanna love you, baby Guess that's why I'm so elated, come on, girl Give it to me, baby (Give it to me, baby) Give it to me, baby (Give it to me, baby) I betcha I'll make you holler you've had enough Give it to me, baby (Give it to me, baby) Just give it to me, baby Give it to me, baby (Give it to me, baby) I betcha I'll make you holler you've had enough Give it to me Give me that stuff, that funk, that sweet, that funky stuff {Say what} Give it to me Give me that stuff, that funk, that sweet, that funky stuff {Say what} Give it to me, give it to me Give it to me, give it to me Give me your stuff, that funk, that sweet, that funky stuff (Yo-ho, ow) Give it to me, baby When I was high as the sky Out all night just dancin' You say, 'Let's go home' {Come on, Rick, I'm tired, let's go home} That's the time I start romancin' You say how can I love you, how can I love you, baby When your body keeps on movin' I say wait till I squeeze you, oh Maybe then you'll start to groovin', come on, girl Give it to me, baby (Give it to me, baby) Give it to me, baby (Give it to me, baby) I betcha I'll make you holler you've had enough Give it to me, baby (Give it to me, baby) Just give it to me, baby Give it to me, baby (Give it to me, baby) I betcha I'll make you holler you've had enough Give it to me Give me that stuff, that funk, that sweet, that funky stuff {Say what} Give it to me Give me that stuff, that funk, that sweet, that funky stuff {Say what} Give it to me, give it to me Give it to me, give it to me Give me your stuff, that funk, that sweet, that funky stuff (Yo-ho, ow) Hey, girl Give it to me what you say Give it to me what you say {Give it to me} What you say {Give it to me}, what you say [Hey, girl] Give it to me what you say Give it to me what you say {Give it to me, give it to me} [Hey, girl] Give it to me what you say Give it to me what you say Give it to me, give it to me Give it to me what you say Give it to me right away Give it to me, give it to me Give it to me what you say

uhm.. HotThang..
that's an interesting thought, but you could interpret most romantic songs like that if you really wanted.. Prince songs not excluded.. Do me baby that's a command right there... he's telling her to do him which is forcing himself on him.. etc.. see how ridiculous that train of thought is? and there it is

Okay, this song is most definitely about rape. Look at how ridiculous these lyrics are:
"I Want Action" Poison I want action tonight Satisfaction all night. I grab my hat and I grab my shoes Tonight I'm gonna hit the streets and cruise Down the main strip and check it out With those schoolgirls a hangin' around Now I'm a sucker for a pretty face I don't care if she's in leather or lace cause I'm just lookin' for a little kiss I want action tonight satisfaction all night You've got the love I need tonight Long legs and short skirts These girls hit me where it hurts I can't wait to get my hands on them I won't give up until they give in Now I'm not lookin' for a love that lasts I need a shot and I need it fast If I can't have her, I'll take her and make her Hey, sweetheart, slide on in here No, not in the front, jump in the back Why? Cause there's something back there I want to show ya I want action tonight Satisfaction all night Ah, come on honey, I wasn't that bad! Oh, well.

Damn, UptownDeb beat me to it! "Give It To Me Baby" has always disturbed me.
"I'll make you holler you've had enough" by itself doesn't necessarily have rape connotations, but in the context of "I came home high as a kite and you refused to fuck me," well, it just gives me a stomachache. The Normal Whores Club

I don't think *most* romantic songs fall into the Date Rape category, but some definitely do. Do Me Baby has some date-rapish qualities, but the singer makes it clear that the love-making should be mutual. However, the last bit before "I'm so cold, just hold me" does go a bit off the deep end. Also, I don't think looking at songs from a different perspective is necessarily ridiculous. Perhaps, not looking at some of these songs from the atypical perspective is ridiculous...who's to say? The message you're about to hear is not meant for transmission
