Stevie's "Talkin' Book" for the first time :)

thanx 2 Rialb i have the album
****1/2

I remember hearing "U R The Sunshine Of My Life" on the radio all the time a nice radio homely singalong, not of my favorite take or anything but it is listen2able.
The scariness of "Maybe You Baby". It is haunting and sad....but in a way it is kinda funky. His speeded up vocals really show his experimentation and willingness to go beyond in his music.
TUESDAY HEARTBREAK!!!!! I LOVE THIS SONG! This sounds like Prince coudda made this as some bootleg in 1986 or something. I really love the harmony arrangement, and the handclaps. I wish he let this song run for 6 minutes like the others.
Of course there is "Superstition" which i have heard 80 times already so im not gonna comment on that.
The middle eastern folk song "Big Brother" is very earthly and calm...something that can be sung at a campfire, lol. I love the lyrics; speaking about living in the ghettos, politics, and crowded housing.
"Balme It On The Sun" and "Lookin 4 Another Pure Love" i dont think i have given a chance yet because they didnt stand out at all 2 me....even the last track is just kinda so-so, but the album establishes what was going to come for Stevie. Some of the stuff on here sounds the same as the rest of the earlier albums (like the last 3 songs), but maybe it is because I have been listenin 2 Stevie's albums backwards.

I LOVE Maybe Your Baby. Very funky. The live version Prince did with Stevie at Glam Slam is pretty sweet.
I remember singing You And I at wedding receptions when I was in a group back in the day. Folks awlays loved that tune. You've Got It Bad Girl is a fav of mine, too. I think I'll revisit that album. It's been awhile. cool

"Maybe Your Baby" almost sounds like a pre-cursor to Prince's Camille recordings; Prince covered it a lot during the '94 Glam Slam shows... So I guess it was perfect when Stevie came onstage and jammed with him on the tune during the June 26th show....

I was thinking the exact same thing, paligap. Prince definitley idolized this song for the basis of his "Camile" voice (and I would bet money that George Clinton looked at this record too for his alter-egos as well. wink)

Indeed...not a weak track on here...no one has mentioned "You Got It Bad Girl" which along with "Big Brother" are my essentials from this album. Damn, what am I saying EVERYTHING is essential on this puppy!

This was the first Stevie Wonder album I heard, other than Original Musiquarium. I couldn't believe how great it was. I especially like in "You And I" when Stevie sings You and I we could rule the world. I don't know why but that line always gives me chills. Also the guitar in "Lookin' For Another Pure Love" kills me. Awesome album. Of course after I heard it I got most of Stevie's '70s albums and they are all great but Talking Book will always be my favourite cause it was the first one I heard.

Yup. This album is from 1972. George didn't cook up Sir Nose till 1976, I think. Maybe 1977? It could have been 1975 but it was definitely after Talking Book.

Anybody ever notice how the intro to both "Maybe Your Baby" and "Tuesday Heartbreak" are only differentiated by tempo?

Btw, when it comes to "You Are The Sunshine Of My Life," Stevie is one of the very few who could sing sappy lyrics without it really coming off as sappy...until "I Just Called To Say I Love You"...eek

A common criticism of Fulfilingness' First Finale is that it's just a collection of songs. Many of the songs are great but they don't gel as well as Stevie's other '70s albums. Of course this is nitpicking. But I would rank Fullfillingness' First Finale just a shade below Talking Book and Innervisions.

I never knew what it was about Fullfill... that I didn't like. Maybe that is it. It's still good, but it never grabbed me like Music of My Mind, Talking Book, Innervisions, or Songs in the Key of Life.

I love Talking Book, especially Big Brother, Looking for Another Pure Love, of course Superstition.

I also think it's weird he's the third person to sing on the album, kinda like 1999.
