Their best album bar none.

Here's how I rate their better known albums with John Frusciante:

1. Blood Sugar Sex Magik - **** 1/2
2. By The Way - ****
3. Californication - ****
4. Mother's Milk - *** 1/2

I love the Red Hot Chili Peppers, but I saw them live before a few years ago when the Foo Fighters opened for them and I was really disappoited. I expected them to be a lot better from what I heard about their shows.

Anyway, my favorite albums from them are Blood Sugar Sex Magik, Californication, and By The Way. And, yes, I do love One Hot Minute, too, though a lot of their fans didn't like it too much. I thought Dave Navarro was great with them.
'Cause your friends don't dance, and if they don't dance... well, they're no friends of mine.

They have masterpieces. Blod sugar, freakey styley, mothers milk, and even the one with navarro, one hot minute is great. but i cannot stand by the way i am pissed at them for releasing such crap confused

I dig them too, but live Anthony Kiedis sucks big time!! The band is ok, but man, he needs to take some singing lessons!!!
I'll sticj with their studio albums... although their new live cd release must be cleaned on his voice so maybe that'll be ok!
the beautiful ones, you always seem to loose

UptownDeb

This has nothing to go with the group's music, but years ago I remember watching the Newly Wed Game. One newly wedded husband was this very, meticulously groomed guy named "Blackie." He was such a piece of work; he took himself so seriously it was funny. It was a game show, so I figured the guy must've been an actor, I mean his antics were so over the top.

Anyway, a few years ago, I caught this behind the music type show on the RCHP. When they focused on Anthony's childhood they showed a picture of him and his dad. His dad turned out to be.... "Blackie!" eek

BSSM was a great 9/10 album but they haven't made a decent one since IMO.
The previous 4 albums aon EMI were bold, brash & funky. 'Freaky styley' with George Clinton is a must-own. However BSSM was their swansong & since then they have been catering for the masses. They have just gotten worse & worse & more poppy since '91.

I'd say their musical decline is up there with the most painful in history but they have more fans now than ever - but thats the state of music industry today.
The Funk, the whole funk & nothin' but the funk, ya dig?!

eye agree with ya except 4 the star ratings, BSSM and Cali r undoubtly 5* efforts.
I also like OneHotMinute - I liked Dave's input in the band, I wish he concentratrd more on his music rather than "being" a rockstar.

One Hot Minute is probably the worst Chili Peppers album. You're right, Dave Navarro is too much of a try-hard "rock star"....his playing is "ok", but it is way too generic and derivative for my liking. Frusciante is a genius...Navarro could never get that to that ingenious level of playing as displayed on BSSM. And to Supernova, who said BSSM sounds like demos --- IGNORANCE!!! mad wink

ABSO-FUCKING-LUTELY! Check out the Funky Monks DVD sometime for the making of that album....his lines and rhythms are nothing short of ingenious....speaking as a guitar player myself. MILLIONS would disagree with you, Super.

Hell's yeah!!!!! Frusciante rules as a guitarist! He's definitely one of my influences as a guitarist. You had to see him live during the Mother's Milk tour. He was f***in' incredible!!!!!

I think Supernova said that because of what she's heard recently with the band. Yes, John has become a lot less technical with his playing, but it's probably because he wants to reach a pop-oriented audience.

Seriously...ingenious. Some of his licks are flourishes on that album are up there with Hendrix in terms of originality and inventiveness.

I like Primus...I have a few of their albums and have seen them live. But busy playing doesn't equal better. Les Claypool may be more esoteric and Zappa-esque, but that doesn't mean his better. They're like chalk and cheese....and personally, I prefer to listen to Flea ANY day. Primus's music hasn't really aged that well and their last album, Anti-Pop was crap (if that was their last album).

No POOK, Blood Sugar Sex Magik was not an album of demos. It was a meticulously created ALBUM. You only have to watch Funky Monks to see that. Those interlocking bass and guitar lines weren't just off the cuff jams.

I may have caught the train late, but I like By the Way, even with it's popish overtones. My favroite songs from that album are Tear, Universally speaking, Dosed, Venice Queen....hell the whole album. If you want to blame anybody for their most recent sound since BloodSugar, blame Rick Rubin. I haven't heard most of their work pre John F, the Heilel(sic) years, and had they stayed with that funk rock sound, they would still be a fringe group- the group you are familiar with, but can't name a song from them- and no one would care. All of their recent albums since bloodsugar were made to sell, and sold they did. why would you want them to stay in one mode forever? Even the butthole surfers went POP for a second.

Actually, the biggest influence on the Chili's latest sound since Californication onwards is John Frusciante....he's basically the "musical director" of the band these days. After his death-defying spell with heroin abuse, John returned to the band, having not played guitar very much for about 9 years, which reduced his technical chops somewhat, but in the place of those he came with a highly developed pop-sensiblity. He is the reason the band had such hits with "Otherside", "Scar Tissue", "By The Way", "The Zephyr Song" amongst others.

I can agree with that. He has had that major of an infulence on Anthony & the crew, he gets credit for that. I'm gald he has kicked the heroin habit, it would have been another death nail-no pun or harm meant- for RHCP had he died like Hilel.
