question sacd

hey

just wanted to know if super audio cd's are playable at a regular cd-player. I know you need a special player for the 'special' sound, but what does a sacd played on a regular cd-player sound like?

Btw: think the whole thing is a ripoff, i'm not gonna buy a whole new stereo for a format that probably won't last another year (anyone remember video-cd?)

I'm not really an expert but from what I know, some SACDs can be played on a regular CD player. It depends if the SACD has a dual layer for regular 2-channel CD players. SACDs played on a regular CD player sound like a regular CD because a standard CD player won't be able to access the SACD layer with the 5.1 surround sound code. However, all regular CDs can be played on SACD players.

I'm waiting for DVD-audio to take off. Then I can just play 5.1 surround sound albums in my DVD player.
