I've gotta side with you on that point. And that holla and squeal-a-thon she did with Rick James on the BET Awards show didn't help to change my opinion. I prefer her ballads myself, a LOT of her dance stuff is just too dated & 80's sounding. But not all her ballads, hence the holes in my collection. Gotta give all that stuff another shot. I've never been a huge TM fan. She can sang, and she doesn't fake the funk but...I don't know....
Once a co-worker mentioned how he thought Teena tries to "out black" everybody. I don't think so. Just always thought she was a product of her environment. But, then again, I don't know a whole lot about her background....

I also remember when she did "Lovergirl" on the TV show "Motown Live" in the late 1990s and broke it down into a few lines of "Sexy Dancer". I but Rick was fuming when he saw that. I keep seeing the name Jill Jones popping up on Teena's earlier albums. I wonder if that is the same Jill Jones that later worked with Prince. Yeah. Jill sung backup on Teena's early albums. Even co-wrote some shit. That's where P met J.J. while she was singing backup in Teena's band while she opened for P on the Dirty Mind tour. Teena's best album by far is Emerald City. Bootsy's on the title track. A cat named Bendrix is all over the album on guitar. Stevie Ray Vaughn is on lead on "You're So Heavy". SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

TEENA IS MY GIRL!
ALOT OF PEOPLE LISTED THEIR FAVORITE SONG, BUT NO ONE LISTED YOUNG LOVE! AM I THE ONLY ONE WHO LOVED THIS SONG? BESIDE PORTUGUESE LOVE, THESE TWO SONGS ARE HER BEST BALLADS WHICH DEFINTELY PUT HER ON THE MAP. I'M NOT SHOUTING, JEEZ!

And what the hell is "out-black" anyway Reminds me of the "Whitney trying to be White" shit. Too many boxes, folks. Sometimes, you gotta just let a muufucka be...

I love Teena.
I have to say she is my all time fave female artist and in the top 5 for male or female. To me she is a female version of Prince... in that she doesn't fit in some preconcieved box, writes her own music and not some glib Beyonce, Mariah lyrics (not knocking them just I like more thought provoking lyrics) and she can actually play instruments. And she is also experiencing a resurgence in her career just like P after battling against the big bad record company. I got nothing but LOVE FOR TEENA!!!! Dayum I wish I had a turntable to play my vinyls... I keep moving from place to place and taking my albums with me and haven't played them in at least 10 years.. one day....
