R&B Classic of the Day: "And The Beat Goes On" by The Whispers (1979)

I know all you Old Schoolers remember this jam.The Whispers have many classic hits, but I think "And The Beat Goes On" is their finest moment. In late 1979,this song came out and took R&B radio by storm. It's one of those hook-filled jams that stays in your head all day long...."and the beat goes on...just like my love...everlasting...oh....and the beat goes on".Hearing this song takes me right back to the golden days of Solar Records, when the artists on that label took turns topping the R&B charts (Shalamar,Lakeside,Dynasty,Carrie Lucas, etc) and when R&B songs were all about "the groove".It's just one of those songs that make you feel so good.

And The Beat Goes On

by The Whispers (1979)

(written by Leon Sylvers III,S.Shockley,William Shelby)

(chorus)
And the beat goes on
just like my love...everlasting
And the beat goes on
Still moving strong...on and on

Do you ever wonder
why to win,somebody's gotta lose
I might as well get over the blues
Just like fishing in the ocean
there'll always be something new
(who loves you better)
you did me wrong, but I've been through stormy weather

(chorus)
And the beat goes on
just like my love...everlasting (oh)
And the beat goes on (better believe it)
still moving strong...on and on

Don't stop for nobody
this time I'll keep my feet on solid ground
now I understand myself when I'm down
like the sweet sound of hit music
there'll always be something new
(to keep the tables burning)
hey,they sing a song,but there'll never be an ending

(chorus)
And the beat goes on
just like my love...everlasting (oh)
And the beat goes on
still moving strong...on and on

The beat goes on,the beat goes on,the beat goes on
The beat goes on,the beat goes on,the beat goes on
huh

Guitar playin' that feel,be sure the beat is real

The beat goes on

Do you ever wonder,well
why to win,somebody's gotta lose
I might as well get over the blues
just like fishing in the ocean
there'll always be someone new
(who loves you better)
Girl, you did me wrong, but I've been through stormy weather

That's a good choice, I wouldn't have thought about that. I used to mix it with Bounce, Rock, Skate, Roll by Vaughn Mason and Crew.

That tune was a hit the year I came to L.A.

Other Whispers groovers:
In The Raw
Keep On Lovin' Me
Just Gets Better With Time
In The Mood
Rock Steady

The Solar releases definitely had that "happy" vibe.
