Well, you don't have a whole big mess to choose from - I'd say splurge and get "Bleach" and "In Utero". "Incesticide" is a decent album, but it's kinda odds'n'sods...more for folks who are kinda acquainted with their music and wanna hear rarities and whatnot. Work your way up to that. The MTV Unplugged album is quite nice - I think it's a really mellow, beautiful album that shows an understated maturity that Kurt coulda really grown into...

DEFINITELY In Utero!!!!!
My favourite Nirvana album and in my top 5 albums of all time!

I'd say get them all, but it depends on if you wanna go backwards or forwards. Save Incesticide for last as it's probably the weakest of the bunch (really just outtakes). But you can't go wrong with Bleach or In Utero, and the unplugged show is awesome too. Then if you're into live stuff, get their Muddy Banks live album. And then there're tons of bootleggs. If you wanna get that deep, get the Outcesticide albums, especially the first one. "You need people like me so you can point your fuckin' fingers and say, "That's the bad guy." "

In Utero sounds the best to me. It's recorded so great. The tones, from those first stick clicks, to that first dissonant chord, you can almost feel the electricity. And the drum tones are so incredible and hot in the mix.

well said! In Utero has one of the best natural sounding production jobs of all time! Did you know Steve Albini (engineer, producer) used about 25 mics on the snare drum alone?! No effects, just a lot of mics! Insane....but it certainly gave that snare a unique sound!

i say you take all the Nirvana cd's you can find and smash them to pieces and get them out of society...they totally ruined music and it hasnt recovered since...Cobain should have pulled the trigger 3 years sooner and saved us from such horrid music.. Nirvana CHANGED music for the better, getting rid of the horrible hair metal of the 80s and bringing back strong SONGWRITING. And your comment about his suicide is just sick.

Kurt is widely acknowledged as having been a beautiful human being. and if you like Poison and all that shit, god help you... Kurt's music was not only angry, it was anger mixed with beauty....ever heard Unplugged? Really pretty stuff. He was a GENIUS songwriter in the vein of Lennon and could have gone on to very great things in many peoples' opinion...the whole point of his lyrics was CONVICTION not necessarily DICTION. And lyric sheets are always available anyway, and when you actually read his lyrics they are amazingly profound and poetic, full of mixed metaphors, ironies and contradictions which mostly spoke of love without actually using the word very often. So yes, get a clue, but then again if you like Poison and hair metal, I'm glad you're not a Nirvana fan anyway. oh and the knockoffs you speak of actually bear more resemblance to early Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and hair metal than the punk spirit of Nirvana. seriously, you don't know what you're talking about. . Bands like Nirvana saved the world from that hair band garbage. At least Cobain's music meant something. Who the fuck cared what Poison was singing about? Stupid argument about Kurt's value to music aside, I think IN UTERO is clearly their best album. After 10 years, it sounds even better than it did in 1994. NEVERMIND (though Teen Spirit, Lithium, and In Bloom will remain classics) now sounds way too clean and glossy (IMHO). I never make it all the way through. The second half really drags now. All the songs sound a little too similar to me. And I'm a HUGE Nirvana-head.

which album was Rape Me on?? Was it In Utero? Although the title of the song isn't the most politically correct, the song is awesome! The day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom - Anais Nin

Get "In Utero" first, then "MTV Unplugged in New York," those two and "Nevermind" are essentials. "Incesticide" and "Bleach" are also good albums, just not great in my opinion.

Since this thread went way off course, I won't try to stir up more shit. Suicide, to me is always a selfish and horrible way to leave one's family. Any sympathy in this case should go towrds Frances Bean Cobain. One parent is gone, and the other is in trouble. Only GOD really knows her pain. Jeux Sans Frontiers
