The No-Wave Thread

...a little bit punk, a little bit funk, a little bit art, a little bit trash....

"Stuck between Punk Rock noise and New Wave explorations, the No Wave scene was born in New York where it lived a short life in tight connection with downtown's avant-garde artistic crowd. Mostly an attitude towards music, it was characterized by the refusal of traditional Rock 'n' Roll format (chords, chorus...) and the incorporation of exterior influences such as Free Jazz (the Loft Scene), contemporary and black music (funk, disco)." I love this shit too Anx.. james white & the contortions, teenage Jesus, DNA, MARS,Theorectical Girls, Bush tetras. I used to listen to the No New York incessantly on vynl for years until I bought the expensive but worth it Japanese import CD. If anybody's that's curious thats a must purchase. This LP produced by Briano Eno showcases the creme dela creme of the then current NY No Wave bands. hear James White sing a true punk funk version of James brown's When You touch me , listen as Lydia Lunch warble about being "treated like Sharon Tate", Arto Lindsay a Don Knotts look a like knocking out shards of guitar beauty while japanese drummer Ikue Mori pummels away on drums.I just got the early works of DNA just yesterday btw.Good stuff.

i need to dig deeper into no-wave...i think it's fascinating that such an explosion of great music was confined to such a minor lil' hipster craze in downtown NYC for such a brief time. i'm reading the sonic youth bio "confusion is next" right now, and it's as much of a document of the no-wave scene as it is a book about the band...really interesting and cool stuff...and i gotta get that eno comp!
