Everybody-everybody stomp...

You have a lot of the facts down there. One of the worst things that went down with "King Jay records" was what he did with Thresa. Don't know if you remember them but they had a modest hit with a song called "The Last Time". Well, Thresa King, the lead singer of the duo and my oldest daughters god mother, got dropped by Jay because she wouldn't give up the booty. Her album stalled at around 300K copies because dude was pocketing her promo money Atlantic records was providing for the next single, "Whatcha Gonna Do." Jay also had a bad crack habit that further led to the unsettled state of his company. Some how he was able to convince Michael Cooper (from Confunkshun) to hook up with him and they released Mike's solo album. It wasn't long before Jay fucked up that relationship too and Sac's chances of becoming a force in the R&B world died with it.

shocked

Jay is quite a character, isn't he? His ego was out of control.I recall a Black Beat article from 1987 where he was bragging that Club Nouveau "stole the show" from Ready For The World and Bobby Brown, when all three acts toured together. It must have been quite a blow to his ego when all of Club Nouveau's subsequent records flopped. But you know what? In 1993,I met the female lead singer Valerie Watson (I think that's her name) at a nightclub, and she's the sweetest, nicest lady you could ever meet. She gave me her autograph, and mentioned that she was preparing a solo album.I guess it never materialized? But anyway,Club Nouveau is working on a new CD (they're now signed to Thump Records,if I'm not mistaken).

Right on. Valerie is a cool person. The "new" CN opened for the Time, Brothers Johnson and Gap Band here in sac a few summers ago. They are a trio now with Jay, Val and some new cat. There show was really really bad, with most of the crowd going to the snack bar or sitting their bored by the time they got to their third song. It's pretty bad when u can't get any love with a come back in your home town. I wouldn't expect anything to come of this so-called "comeback"

Hey nothing wrong with O'Bryan. "The Giggelo", "I'm Freaky", "Lovelite", "You and I" O'Bryan had a nice run during the early 80's

Jill, you're the first person i've ever met to mention the Jonzun Crew. They were my favorites from the electric funk groups of those days smile I have "space cowboy" and "we are the jonzun crew". Only songs I could find by them.

Speaking of Rumors, does anybody remember Roaches by Bobby Jimmy & the Critters? lol
Yep. I'm trying to remember the words now. lol

Oh, shit! I'd completely forgotten about "Roaches!" They used to play those two back-to-back.
Look at all these roaches
Around me everyday
Need somethin' strong
To make 'em go away
Look at all these roaches
I can't take it no more
Get up at night, turn on the light
And see the floor show

And wasn't there a parody of "Friends" called "Hair"?
CHICKENS ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO DO COCAINE, SILKY HEN.

confuse

On their 1981 debut single "Gigolette",you can clearly hear Teena in the song, saying things like "Baby, are you talking to me?...."Where's my backup, sing it all!".The music on this song is very similiar to "Square Biz".They were her backup band, and she helped produce their first album.
