Back in those days, I was so much into the funk, I didn't care too much for the rock. Now that hip hop has made funk pretty much extinct, I have been getting into the 1980s rock/new wave.

These are all good groups. What kinda irritates me is that most people don't know who they are, but they've sure heard their songs sampled to death! Sad that most people in their 20s or younger would only know Lakeside through Coolio songs; Kleeer because of DJ Quik; Mass Production because of 2 Live Crew, etc...

They were proteges of Rick James, dressed like they were in the 60s,with the process hairdos and stuff...lol...when you think about it,Rick really should have started his own record label in the 80s.He had a knack for picking really good acts with talent....

The Mary Jane Girls
Val Young
Process and The Doo Rags
Stone City Band

I think he had plans for a label called Mary Jane Records,to be distributed by Motown/Gordy,but it never materialized.

aww COME ON! Are you saying this is OLD SCHOOL?? When I want to listen to some jam music, I wish I could hear some of this!

Loose Ends... bought the first 2 or 3 albums, didn't like them when lead singer Jane left.
Levert eek They are still charting.. are they considered old skool?

Club Nouvea well they ruled the radio for 2 hot summers Why you treat me so bad one summer and Rumors the next.

Midnight Starr AND Atlantic Starr. 2 great bands.

What ever happened to bands?? Ya know a lead singer and people playing real instruments. Wow now I am starting to sound like you know who.

Rumors was actually "Timex Social Club". That was the group Jay King had before he ran Tommy and Denny off. I was pretty connected to the Sac music scene during that whole time and could tell you some crazy stories about CN and Jay King.

Yeah,I've heard some crazy stories about Club Nouveau and their egomaniac leader Jay King. He's the one who actually prevented them from having a long, successful career. He got jealous of members Thomas McElroy and Denzil Foster, who angrily left the band and later became successful producers in their own right (sound familiar? LOL).Then,in 1987,the band was offered an opportunity of a lifetime.Madonna was a huge fan,and she asked them to be the opening act on her massive "Who's That Girl" World Tour, which was scheduled to play huge stadiums around the world. This tour would have exposed Club Nouveau to their biggest audience yet,but only a week before the tour was to begin,Jay cancelled. He boldly said "Madonna doesn't need us,and we don't need her".Of course, this was career suicide for them.A few more albums followed, and were quickly collecting dust in the markdown bins.Meanwhile,Thomas and Denzil were producing successful albums by EnVogue, leaving Jay and his massive ego in the dust.To most of the pop world,Club Nouveau is remembered as a one-hit wonder.

HOT CHOCOLATE ---the guys who sing "Emma"(1975),"You Sexy Thing"(1975),and "Every 1's A Winner"(1979).They were more of a pop band.

CHOCOLATE MILK ---the guys who gave us "Action Speaks Louder Than Words" (1975),"Girl Callin" (1978),"Blue Jeans" (1980) and "Take It Off" (1984).They were more of a funk band.

You have a lot of the facts down there. One of the worst things that went down with "King Jay records" was what he did with Thresa. Don't know if you remember them but they had a modest hit with a song called "The Last Time". Well, Thresa King, the lead singer of the duo and my oldest daughters god mother, got dropped by Jay because she wouldn't give up the booty. Her album stalled at around 300K copies because dude was pocketing her promo money Atlantic records was providing for the next single, "Whatcha Gonna Do." Jay also had a bad crack habit that further led to the unsettled state of his company. Some how he was able to convince Michael Cooper (from Confunkshun) to hook up with him and they released Mike's solo album. It wasn't long before Jay fucked up that relationship too and Sac's chances of becoming a force in the R&B world died with it.

shocked

Jay is quite a character, isn't he? His ego was out of control.I recall a Black Beat article from 1987 where he was bragging that Club Nouveau "stole the show" from Ready For The World and Bobby Brown, when all three acts toured together. It must have been quite a blow to his ego when all of Club Nouveau's subsequent records flopped. But you know what? In 1993,I met the female lead singer Valerie Watson (I think that's her name) at a nightclub, and she's the sweetest, nicest lady you could ever meet. She gave me her autograph, and mentioned that she was preparing a solo album.I guess it never materialized? But anyway,Club Nouveau is working on a new CD (they're now signed to Thump Records,if I'm not mistaken).
