Everyone knows black artists have crossed over to white radio but I want to know your favorite white artists from back in the day that have crossed over to black radio.

Rod Stewart - Passion

Yeah, I think they did. Or at least they got played on the urban radio with their rap song, "The Magnificent 7".

NWF is right. I remember hearing about The Clash's Magnificent 7 being played in black clubs and on black radio stations back in the day.

How could I have forgotten Lisa Stansfield? Been Around the World was not a Barry White song, but she had a 90's hit, Never, Never Gonna Give You Up that was a Barry White remake.

Taylor Dayne didn't crossover with Tell It To My Heart, but she too remade a Barry White song.

And maybe I'm just being too picky with my definition of crossover. To me, it's an artist that had all-around, not just regional, appeal to R&B radio. shrug Then again, I'm sort of a fanatic with R&B chart history. Pardon my knit picking.

That's not nitpicking, that's what crossover success is based on. It's a nationwide thing, not a regional thing.

The fact that small regional success came for some songs from certain non-Soul/R&B artists (and vice versa) in different areas of the country is just partly indicative of the fact that radio was in a much better state during that time. It wasn't controlled by a couple of monopolies, and a lot of DJ's had more freedom to pick what they thought their communities would dig. But regional alone doesn't make for national crossover success, although sometimes it might start out that way.

Now that i've thought about this for a minute...

Dusty Springfield - I Only Want To Be With You
Mitch Ryder & the Detroit Wheels - Devil With A Blue Dress
Soul Survivors - Expressway to your Heart
The Box Tops - The Letter
Three Dog Night - One (if not, maybe one of their other tunes)
The Young Rascals - People Got To Be Free
Laura Nyro - If she didn't chart as an artist she certainly did as a writer
(Stoned Soul Picnic, Eli's Coming)
Dan Hartman - Instant Replay, I Can Dream About You
Bobbie Gentry - Ode To Billie Joe

...I believe these charted R&B. I'm sure RipHer2Shreds can confirm or deny this.
