Has anyone seen the T.A.M.I. show from 1964. If you haven't, you need too check it out. The Battle of the Bands with the Roling Stones and James Brown and his Famous Flames is the greatest live show ever. James Brown's performance is probally his greatest cought on tape.

That wasn't even a skirmish. The Stones got taken to school by "The Hardest Working Man In Show Business".
If you pay attention you'll notice Mick Jagger trying to take notes on what James was doing.
Based on the "chicken dance" Mick came up with during the Stones performance it was obvious he had missed a few pre-requisite courses.

More than likely what was going on was a form of a common practice among American jazz musicians called "head cuttin'".

This a technique used by these musicians to keep themselves sharp on their instruments and keep the "sad" players off the bandstand. Say for example a new musician shows up at a club and asks the bandleader if he could sit in with the group. When this player is brought up, the leader might call a familiar tune like My Favorite Things. The "newbie" would be expecting to play an instrumental version of the tune based on the way it was sung by Julie Andrews. Instead, what he's likely to get is an arrangement whose tempo has been raised to light-speed with impromptu key modulations spread throughout. Or more of a John Coltrane arrangement. This is done to test the player's ability to improvise and think on his feet.

Now in the case of bands, what you'd be trying to do is play the hottest set possible. Something that the band following you, in this cast the Stones, would have an impossible task of topping. And in the most severe cases, they wouldn't want to come onstage at all.

Keith Richards, Mr. Death Cheater himself says that following James Brown on that show was one of the biggest mistakes of their lives.
