MC Hammer beefs with Redman and Dr. Dre I was listening to M.C. Hammer the other day which was The Funky Headhunter. I actually think that the album wan't too bad. I especially liked the song Sleepin' on a Masterplan which I think was produced at the deathrow studios. But anyways, did Hammer had beef with Redman and Dr. Dre because he was talking about them on that album.
It's funny cause on one song, somebody said "you know you want to cuss them fools out".

i don't see why he'd need to beef with 'em, as dr. dre and redman could both mop the floor with ol' parachute-pants anydamnway.

holy shit, someone actually has "The funky headhunter" by hammer?
I love hammer and "The funky headhunter" was very underated and underplayed at the time and is still of course slept on..... "Pumps and a bump" "Dont stop" "Breakin' off something proper" "The funky headhunter" "It's all good" All those tracks r killer and to me a track like "Pumps and a bump" should be up thier with "California love" and "Ain't nothin' but a g thang" but as it was baggy pants Hammer, it never got the attention it deserved.....anyway..... Yeah I can hear him cussin' out Redman and of course 3rd base (remember "Pop goes the weasel" or something like that?) but on "Breakin' off something proper2 i want to know who Hammers guests r on that track as the booklet does not say.....I can't hear a Dre diss though-what track is that from? I heard that Hammer was to be signed to Death row but things fell through and that some more tracks with Death row production was made but never released! I also remember that hammer was friends with Tupac (both from oakland I think?), also that on a MTV rap history interview, Dre actually said alright things about Hammer (and snoop dog admitted to liking him) whilst of course Eminem completely dissed him.....Hammers career could of been very different if the Death row contract went through.....

yeah I could of sworn I heard him call Dre's name out on Break em' off something proper. Maybe I was hearing things.
His wife didn't want hammer signed on to deathrow and she wouldn't have it any other way. Did you see the movie about him on VH-1?

His wife didn't want hammer signed on to deathrow and she wouldn't have it any other way. Did you see the movie about him on VH-1? Hammers wife forbid him 2 sign with Death row? Damn it man, as more songs in the vein of "Pumps in a bump" would of been classic! Also on "Funky headhunter" his rhymes were alot more polished and alot less humour was used too, in fact on each record he did, he gradually got more serious... by "the funky headhunter", he was fed up with people dissing him so he made "Headhunter" to try and squash that! Despite this surprisenly strong record, I wish he kept the sense of humour and general funess u hear on "pump it up (its time for the news)","Yo sweetness", "Let's get it started" etc... I wish I could c the movie, in UK, VH1 only shows that bloody Jacksons tv movie! I want to c it.....

Maaaaan thats 1 of the fonkiest hiphop cd's ever. People was trippin on Hammer bein hard. I did'nt give a shit he had flow and them beats was kickin! He might not have out rapped Redman but he would have smoked his ass in concert! U,ME,WE!....2FUNKY!

2 my knowledge, Hammer was signed 2 Death Row Records, he is featured in the booklet with the Death Row Greatest Hits CD. In the 'Tupac: Ressurection' book, there r lyrics which Tupac wrote 4 Hammer. The Dr Dre reference mayb bcuz of Dre leaving Death Row and Tupac mentioned Dre in 'Toss It Up'. Hammer signing 2 Death Row was 2 make him a more credible rapper but I think Hammer's trax like 'U Can't Touch This' and 'Pray' r his best.

It's cool if you liked this album, but the reason it tanked is because he looked phony as a gangsta, especially afet the 2legit2quit and Addam's Family crap he had put out. He may have had more street cred and run-ins with the street crowd than I've experienced, but he he looked completely silly in the video for Pumps. He had too too many leeches and "yeah champ" tag-a-longs to last a decent career. Jeux Sans Frontiers

I don't know about any beef with Redman or Dr. Dre, but he should definitely have one with Prince. Looks like Prince raided his closet and stole the Hammer pants:

I came from a similar block in the usa, but not too many of my friends were listening to this hammer. Sure, Hammer's first cd was ok because that music was original and fun. The Hammer, according to the man himself, was not a true representation of himself. It was more a reaction to the backlash that he was experiencing. There are many genres of rap that is about having fun. In the mid 80s, do you recall all the songs that came out that were mocking hits. I can remember about ten songs that sounded just like The Show. Some artists can do both styles. UTFO had fun in their rap and sang. It fit them. I just don't think that album fit Hammer.

Yeah ok fair point, like the fact u still find his first cd cool ("Lets get it started" is my jam with "Turn this mutha out" a close 2nd) but I was only about 6 when I first started liking the hammer and that was when he was blody everywhere in 1990-1991! Most kids down the street were like me, trying to copy his moves etc..... he was a great introduction to rap and even 6 was young to even be listening to Hammer! (and Vanilla ice was complete crap so I saw through that even at my age) So maybe some of it is memories 4 me u know?.....

jbchavez said: Sure, Hammer's first cd was ok because that music was original There was never anything original about Hammer. Not his music (sampled), not his flow (1979ish), not even his pants that everyone keeps referring to (all street dancers on the West Coast were wearing pants like this, even Rerun on "What's Happening". See the movie "Breakin", also, 1983.) UTFO were the first rap/dance act. Hammer was original in being corny enuff to put out a song that white folks could "dance" to (for lack of a better word ) with "You Can't touch This"...a song based on a sample from another song that was inspired by how white folks dance ("I just hit on this punky-funky-sounding line...reminded me of how punkers look funny when they try to dance...I heard it as a goof and never dreamed it'd take off." Rick James, The Ultimate Collection.) I'm sick and tired of the Prince fans being sick and tired of the Prince fans that are sick and tired!

Remember that song he made for some mid-90s soundtrack? I believe it was called "Straight To My Feet." Anyone know what I'm talking about?

Yeah I agree on the pants thing (even new edition beat hammer to it) BUT I guess I was very young then but i still like hammer and depsite ridicule everywhere I go, i will defend him! Regardless of what u say, Hammer was the baddest cat when on the floor- his music WAS original even if it was pop/rap 'cause it sure sounded different to othet pop rap acts like fresh prince and kid and play! His music wasn't as simplistic in the way the lines were arranged as other rappers! Nothing sounded like "U cant touch this" and that was even based on a sample! Same with prince sampled "Pray" and "Here comes the hammer and "2 legit to quit"! No offence but 4 me before hammer, most rap sounded to samey and simplistic, but maybe i need to find lesser known acts like UTFO so i'll keep a look out!..... Even LL cool J sounded like Run DMC at first- man talking of beefs with other rappers, Hammer dared to criticize Run DMC! I think he may of done that on his first album and he blatedly dissed them on "The funky headhunter" album! Hammer did his own thing and 4 a rapper to do that- it takes alot of guts and creativity!

Oh yeah, Hammer does dis' Dr Dre after all!
Misterman, Ur right, on track "Breakin' off something proper", I swear he shouts "Dre, u punk"- damn Hammer, Run dmc and Dre on one album on same track (with redman)- those first 2 disses were the biggest players rap ever saw.....good on u Hammer- u da man! ( I love both Dr and Run Dmc by the way- but out of all the people who'd diss these 2 rap icons- u wouldn't think it be hammer would u? Hammer should of cussed out Vanilli ice 4 cloning him completely and also watered down everything actually fun about hammers records! 3rd base had Vanilla covered though- very blatedly too- did 3rd base or any rapper diss Hammer? )
