Favorite Ska Bands

Who do you like? The Skatalites? Desmond Dekker? Prince Buster? Madness? (How can you not dance to "One Step Beyond") English Beat? Selecter? Specials? Fishbone? Bad Manners? Judge Dread? Some of Bob Marley's earlier stuff(pre dreads) was ska influenced, but I still don't consider him to be ska. Same with No Doubt...before they went "too" pop. I miss the old No Doubt sad . I like most of the older ska bands and kinda lost touch/faith in the ones out now? Can any1 tell me a good new band out now?

Yeah....I would consider them to be ska bands. Esp. early No Doubt.

Anxiety

I like Madness, and I really used to like Fishbone until they started having to put at least one song devoted to their homophobia on every album. rolleyes Truth and Soul is brilliant, though.

I'm completely on board with that sentiment - great album.

I used to really love the Specials, but I honestly can't stand listening to them anymore. I actually prefer Terry Hall's post-Specials bands (Fun Boy Three and Colourfield) these days...

Their first two cds were actually my favorite ones...a lot of ppl. didn't though. I liked their unpolished ska sound, esp. on the 1st cd. Tragic Kingdom is when their music started changing, because I think Eric(Gwen's brother) was leaving around that time. Starting with Tragic Kingdom, their cds became too polished. Before Tragic Kingdom, they didn't get radio play and their videos were rarely played. Which was just fine with me,cuz I don't think you need the radio or MTV to make it.
I don't hate No Doubt past Tragic Kingdom...I just wish they returned to their ska roots. I like a few songs from Return of Saturn and Tragic Kingdom, but Rock Steady is another story. Ok...gotta go eat.

I'm probably the biggest 2-Tone Ska fan here on the org. The Specials are at the top of the list, but I also like:

The English Beat
Madness
The Selecter
Bad Manners
The Swinging Cats
The Bodysnatchers
Rico Rodriguez
The Skatalites
Toots & the Maytals
The Wailers (before they became Reggae legends)
The Toasters
The Untouchables
Fishbone
Operation Ivy
No Doubt
Rancid
Mighty Mighty Bosstones
Sublime
The Slackers
Cherry Poppin' Daddies
Suicide Machines
Let's Go Bowling
Skabba The Hut

.....but you know, with all the new ska around, I think it's just become a parody of itself. It's just not the same as the Ska of Jamaica or Britain.

the specials - the specials cool

the clash - the clash

the sex pistols - NMTB

stiff little fingers - inflammable material

Dude, the Sex Pistols and The Clash are not ska bands. Anyway Bob Marley and the Wailers takes all of em' to school. Jamaican ska beats British ska anyday. worship Bob Marley

I went through a weird ska phase when I was 17 or so back around '91-'94. A friend's older brother was in a local ska band and we would dress mod and go to all the ska shows in town. And man, there were a bunch of 'em back then. We'd also travel to Madison and Chicago for shows. I just sorta fell out of the scene after awhile and I never really looked back. I particularly remember seeing Let's Go Bowling, the Skatalites, the Bosstones, The Specials (not sure if it was the original line-up...) Loved Selecter, The Toasters, early No Doubt, Rancid... hmm... memories.
