Essential Depeche Mode ?

I've recently purchased Depeche's Singles 81-85, and I'm pretty impressed by the selection. Iv'e always wanted to hear some of their work, but when I was in high school years ago, they certainly weren't part of my crowds musical choices ( all hip hop, new jack and soul of the late eighties ). Now that I'm on my own, I bought Violator and Music for the masses. Are there any Depeche fans that could recommend some other albums from them, or better yet let me choose from the one's I wrote below:

Early Years- Black Celebration
Speak & Spell
Catching up with Depeche Mode
101
Construction Time Again

Late Ninties- Songs of Faith & devotion
Ultra
Singles 86-98
Exciter (2001)

I can't purchase them all, money is tight. I just want the best of each bunch, possibly two. Thanks for your help.

this singles collection is awesome and much better than the early stuff in my opinion plus it's just been rereleased (in the UK) at midprice. the best singles are on it from albums which have high and low points such as ultra, which i'd steer clear of personally.
black celebration is meant to be very worthwhile though i've yet to hear it...

I'm not much for the late 90's stuff. I just kinda got bored with them. My top 2 albums would have to be Black Celebration and Music for the Masses.

If you really liked the albums you bought, I suggest you get:

Black Celebration
Songs Of Faith & Devotion (in my opinion, their best album)

If you want more of the earlier stuff, I would suggest "Catching Up with..." as it is really a sampler for the period, however, you have many of those tracks on the singles 81-85.

Songs of faith and devotion is (with Violator) in my opinion their best album!
Exciter is also a great one....

All the albums from Black celebration until now are getting actually better and better.... Befor Black celebration it is just 80's pop, nice to listen to, but not that special, except songs like Blasphemous rumours (awesome song) which tell you what musical direction they we're going later on!

Ultra is also nice, but (to me) an album hard to listen to at once....

good luck with your choice...!
the beautiful ones, you always seem to loose
