tuff choice, but I would most likely go for Bobby Womack (1988)
great track record of classic songs to go with, some fantastic band, fine audience participation, all'n' all everything a concert should have. even including some friendly handshake when Bobby & Band had dinner after the show Vanglorious... this is protected by the red, the black, and the green. With a key... sissy!

Jan 1996.Never in my life I've witness a more dedicated ,awsome & energetic funkattack. This was a small club that was packed with people starving 4 some funk. I was just infront of the stage & it felt like I was run over by the train. /peace Manki I saw Bootsy in 1998 at The Barbican, London, and it sticks out in my memory as one of the best. The Barbican is really best as a classical music venue and it's all seated. That was kind of a problem for the first half of the gig: the music was great, but there was no real atmosphere in the crowd, and people were kinda starting to sit back and just passively take it in. By about halfway through, you could see that the energy level was really starting to sap, and this was clearly bothering Bootsy. He started up this Pink Floyd-ish type of heavy tune, and went into a overdriven bass solo. In the pauses between the parts of his solo he was really going all out to pull the audience up out of its rut (and out of the damned seats!) and almost challenging us to give something back and lift the whole mood - but this was in a Bootsy-ish kind of way, so he was saying stuff like, "Don't act you ain't never been funked before! I know you have urges.....!". Then he'd go back into playing what was the most phenomenal, electrifying bass solo I think I've ever heard, while the band was pounding this swelling, atmospheric groove.... Anyway, as this onslaught continued, resistance was futile - the audience was clearly exhilarated and got up, with loads of people piling down towards the front, climbing over the (very plush!) seats. Bootsy got right back into the funky stuff, and from that point on the rest of the show was never less than electric, with everyone well and truly "on the one"! He even came out into the crowd and got group-hugged by about 50 people! It stick out in my mind, as I hadn't really expected that much from the gig, just some nice grooves and nostalgia, but instead it was transcendent! Also, it made me realise what a great performer Bootsy is. He wouldn't just pass it off as an "off night", even if it was the audience that was letting it down, but was determined to make it a totally beautiful, life-affirming experience for everyone on and off stage!! Just thought I'd share the memory with y'all..... "Not everything that is faced can be changed; but nothing can be changed until it is faced." - James Baldwin

Appart from Prince, it would have to be James Brown.
Just went to see him recently, the band was perfect, there's this guy in the band that makes his blues guitar really weep. JB was awsome, he did this one foot sideway moonwalk accross the stage, his showmanship is really something else and he proved that he's still the king of funk. I took my father to this show and now he can't stop talking about it. -"If U don't like,
what U see here -get the FUNK out."
