Jazz/Funk/rock?: Favorite Level 42 Tracks

wink I was gettin' around to this sooner or later: confused

Level 42 was somewhere in the middle of Jazz/Funk/Rock/progressive Pop (which is where thangs should be!!) - their sound was a little too neat for some folks , but they were always one of my favorite bands. Led by dynamic bassist Mark King and Keyboardist Mike Lindup along with producer keyboardist Wally Badarou (Grace Jones, M, Talking Heads, also known for the club hit "Chief Inspector"), their band inluded the kinetic Gould brothers ,Phil on drums , Boon on guitar and later, a revolving door of musicians that included Allan Holdsworth, Gary Husband, Alan Murphy,Gary Barnacle, and others...(Their third album, Standing in the Light, was produced by EWF's Verdine White and Larry Dunn)

My favorite tracks:

World Machine
Lying Still
The Pursuit Of Accidents
Children Say
Good Man In a Storm
Kansas City Milkman
Seven Days
A Kinder Eye
A Little Love
The Machine Stops
Out Of Sight, Out Of Mind
Man
I Want Eyes
Starchild
Kouyate
Love Games
Leaving Me Now
It's Over
Two Solitudes
I Sleep on my Heart

If You Were Mine
Sunbed Song

Oddly enough, one of their tunes I wasn't crazy about was their best known song, "Something about You" ...don't know why that one doesn't grab me...

omfg That's the one that got me hooked. I had never heard of those cats before until someone hipped me to the World Machine LP. The start of the LP had me hooked on their music forever.

I am going to give the the very predictable (but still justifiable) answer

Something About You

but there's another L42 track - I believe it was them - that I used to hear at a local rollerskating rink YEARS ago..
something about a dead man or a bird man..
a lyric about "give me the chance to speak my mind.. don't you know that after all, all I really wanted [?] is you.."
or something like that..
if anyone knows that this is a L42 song, I would like to get the name of this track.
I'll see you tonight..
in ALL MY DREAMS..

Yup - Level 42 -" Sleepwalkers" :

I wear my ray-bans, driving in the car
even on a cloudy day
she always says Man!, who d'you think you are?
'cause she don't see it my way
we are all sleepwalkers
we only see the things we wanna see
tunnel visions
and there's no end in sight
But after all we've been through
I know this much to be true
though I don't think like you do
don't you know that after all
all I really need is you

I have a game plan, but my love is in a jar
it don't come into play
she always says Man!, no matter where we are,
you're always miles away!
we are all sleepwalkers
we don't see nothing we don't wanna see
we dream in color
we paint each other black and white
Let's take one step at a time (at a time)
let's take each day as we find (as we find)
give me the chance to speak my mind
don't you know that after all
that's all I really need
to cross that line
We give - the impression that all is well
trying to live - all of the lies we tell
we cry - when there's no one near
we don't know why - there just ain't enough love
in these alien years
I wear my ray-bans, driving in the car
on a cloudy day
the wheel in one hand, the other on my heart
I'm trying to see it her way
though we are all sleepwalkers
we only see the things we wanna see
I get the feeling
maybe there's an end in sight

My favorites by far are:

Love In A Peaceful World(the last minute or so of this joint makes me grab my bass everytime I hear it!)

It's Over

Children Say

Freedom Someday

Leaving Me Now

And as a bonus: Staring At The Sun(I happened to listen to it at 3:30a.m. It's stuck with me ever since)

Love & Light,
