I don't cry much, but this performance brought me to tears: Sammy Davis Jr. So I'm looking through all my Tivo episodes from the Flip Wilson Show marathon yesterday & putting the musical performances on VHS. Some classic shit here - Aretha doing Rock Steady, J5, Donnie Hathaway -- but I was NOT ready for this...
Now I partially blame my parents & my older, wiser siblings for my utter lack of knowledge in so many areas, particularly in music. I know it's up to me now but damn, give a child a good base to start from - any appreciation of the arts is always good! I wish they'd exposed me more to what's classic & unforgettable. Outside of my dad playing Aretha & Al Green (and ONLY Aretha & Al) day & night, I was not schooled me properly. As a result I only knew Sammy Davis Jr. as an obvious legend w/ a "nice" voice, dancer, actor, used to sing that Candy Man song I loved as a kid. But watching him come onstage & do Mr. Bojangles literally brought me to tears. I was just so moved by how graceful this man was, the power of his voice, the absolute poise in every step & gesture. It wasn't just "lemme go sing this song", it was a moving, breathing, breathtaking piece of art. And the song itself rips at your guts on content alone! I sat there buggin' out w/ my eyes welling up - it was that beautiful. I know I must sound silly being many many MANY years late discovering how special this man was but I just had to put it down b/c it hit me so hard tonight. It's funny when you see what passes for a "star" these days & look back on something like this - no half assed, lazy, misguided shit here. No dependance on sex or costume or a bullshit light show - it was simple & it was brilliant. Even if he lip sync'd it (which I'm still trying to figure out) he did it that well, I can usually tell. Anyway, I'm really glad they're reruning these shows so those (like me) who either never knew or easily forget how truly amazing some of these artists are & were can remember. If anybody cares TV Land is showing an episode of the Flip Wilson show every day @ 5pm. I'm waiting for the James Brown, Lena Horne & Louis Armstrong episodes. SWEET . Great footage, great improv skills (like the jukebox at the bus stop?!?)
I picked-up the Rat pack cd/dvd thing (don't remember what it's called) but the Sammy stuff outshined everything the other rats did | |
