Rod Temperton's songs: Heatwave, MJ, Quincy, etc.

give it up for Rod!!....

Funny that a British white man is responsible for so many songs in Black Music...keyboardist /composer and central member of Heatwave, as well as one of Quincy Jones' favorite composers, Rod has a pretty impressive legacy of songs...just some of them:

Always and Forever (Heatwave)
Boogie Nights (Heatwave)
The Groove Line (Heatwave)
Ain't No Half Steppin' (Heatwave)
Off The Wall (MJ)
Thriller(MJ)
Give Me The Night (George Benson)
Star of a Story (Heatwave, George Benson)
Love X Love (George Benson)
The Secret Garden (Quincy Jones)
Rock With You (MJ)
The Lady In My Life (MJ)
Baby Be Mine (MJ)

Something Special (Quincy Jones)
The Dude (Quincy Jones)
Back On The Block (Quincy Jones)
You Put A Move On My Heart (Mica Paris and Quincy Jones/Tamia)
Mystery (Manhattan Transfer and Anita Baker_)
Look After Love (Heatwave)
All You Do Is Dial (Heatwave)
Sweet Freedom (Michael Mcdonald)
Stomp (Brothers Johnson)
Treasure (Brothers Johnson)
All About The Heaven (Brothers Johnson)
Closer To The One That You Love (Brothers Johnson)
Celebrations (Brothers Johnson)

The return of list-boy! lol I really dig late 70s, early 80s Rod Temperton. He wrote some great songs, and all the ones you listed are prime examples. Well...maybe not Livin' In America by Donna Summer (this coming from a huge Summer fan!).

Man wrote a few songs 4 Siedah Garett's cd in 1988.

Album called "Kiss of life" and is pretty drum programmed pop that has a couple of good songs actually ("Refuse to be loose" "Kiss of life" "The legend of Ruby diamond") but the couple Rod cuts r very average.....

Some people say that jacko should of stuck with Rod 4 "Bad", but hearing Rods efforts on Siedah's album, Mike was right on ditching him on that one.....

(Seidah co wrote Mj's "Man in the mirror" and later "Keep the faith" and dueted with him on "I just can't stop loving u")

Wasnt "Refuse to Be Loose" written by LA & Babyface? Boy I havent thought of Ms. Garrett's Kiss Of Life in ages.....its a shame her personality isnt allowed to shine during madge's tour.....i dont recall which songs Rod did and me thinks im going to have to tear into these moving boxes and find that tape and listen to it...

I love the story behind Ya Mo Be There.....McDonald and Ingram didnt want an overtly religious song out of fear it wouldnt get radioplay...so they replaced God Will Be there with Ya Mo Be There..... lol

I know it doesn't matter, but...

I never would've guessed he was white

Always & Forever is a true classic

Glad you explained Ya Mo Be there. Now I know that's not the songwriter's fault.

I knew about a lot of these songs (off the wall, all those Heatwave tracks, etc.)
but there were a lot more of which I didn't know.

VERY impressive list, some of THE BEST music to come out of that period.
I'll see you tonight..

I was a huge Heatwave fan and knew Rod Templeton was responsible for many RB hits. I think most of MJ's biggest hits from that era was written by Rod and Quincy.
To me, the songwriter has the talent... there are many many better singers than MJ who could have made huge hits out of a great song.

check out ur goddamn facts.

michael has written all his biggest hits. twymmf, dirty diana, smooth, bad, loving u,black or white, care bout us etc.

there are many many better singers than MJ who could have made huge hits out of a great song.

did you watch MJ The One, what other singers, producers, poets say about Mj's vocal ability.

"if u wanna study music as whole, you get MJ"
"thet are called musicians' bibles. and MJ s one of those artists which you read bout. how to write lyrics, how to get your vocals like him" etc etc"
george clinton and all other artists praise his talent

and quincy didnt write any song for MJ but pretty young thing. and it's cowrtitten.

I think most of MJ's biggest hits from that era was written by Rod

Rod has written MJ a no.1 "Rock with you"

MJ has written himself 3 no1s "bille jean, dont stop, beat it"

I just love the fact that RT is from Grimsby lol All through my childhood I thouyght he was this big black dude from Philly or something, but he sounds just like William Hague (former Tory party leader) when he talks.

Anyone heard Groove Of Midnight from Siedah Garrett's debut solo album from 1988? I love that song.

To me the only song that was worthwhile was Billie Jean. Those others listed.... uhmmm not impressed.

Quincy turned Michael's career around! Michael was like a puppet. Before Quincy the last thing we heard from Michael was Ben and the Wiz.

Rod has written MJ a no.1 "Rock with you"

There were other cuts on that album that RT wrote that were solid hits but you are not listing... Lady of my life is the first one that comes to mind. A huge RB hit.

Do ur'e research. Micheal wrote many of the "hits" himself. His biggest and signature one, Billy Jean was written by Michael. And I doubt that there are others who would have the justice that Michael did to Thriller or any of the songs that Temperton had his hand in for Michael. Who else could pull of these songs like Michael did? The Temperton MJ songs like Thriller were made 4 michael, and no1 else.

Michael is a damn fine singer. Back then, who could have "..made huge hits out of a great song..", when it came to those Temperton MJ 1's?

Props are given when they are genuinely deserved, and Michael certainly deserves them, for belting out some of the biggest hits ever, with his vocals as well as his feet.
