The unreleased songs played at the Celebration listening session 1) Whenever (1976)- Grand Central track 2) Machine (1976) - Another Grand Central track. Aka Funk Machine 3) I Am You (1977) - Disco leaning track that's on Timeless 4) Question of U (1985) - Prince and Eric Leeds only. No vocals. 5) Evolsidog (1985) - The entire song. 6) Tick Tick Bang - Do NOT be confused. An entire raucous rock track that sounds NOTHING like the track you know. 7) I'll Do Anything (1992) - Full NPG band version recorded while on tour. 8) Life O' the Party (2002) - Camille version with a DC funk bounce. Sparse instrumentation. 9) Song of the Heart (no vocals) - Only used as a backdrop here for a brief fan contest on stage. 10) The Guilty Ones (2007) 11) Girls in the Band (2008) 12) So Bad (Jan. 14, 2016)

It seems Tick Tick Bang is a 3rd version, more rock, of the track. Not the '81 or '90 versions.

. Yes. This is interesting.

It's worth nothing that the track length of "Tick Tick Bang" on Timeless is just about the same as the circulating demo from 1981. Seems likely that it's an overdubbed/updated version of the original demo recording.

. Good point. | |

CaseyRain's description of "Tick Tick Bang" makes it sound like it's not as drastically different from the 1981 demo as Funkatopia suggested:

. I saw it. Maybe Funkatopia was misled by memory.

And what can you tell us about that track?

It’s crazy that they didn’t include “So Bad” on Timeless instead of “How Come You Don’t Call Me Anymore?” (Live). U are now an official member of the New Power Generation

Shame they didn't play the whole album. Would have been interesting to see how people thought the tracks worked together.

Full review from Casey Rain on X :
1. "Whenever" (1976) One of the earliest found recordings of Prince and Grand Central band from an actual studio. This track starts with a jazzy piano intro with sweeping percussion and P falsetto. It's mid tempo R&B soul pop very much in the style of EW&F or groups like the Delfonics or Stylistics.
2. "Machine" (1976, ASI Studios) Another Grand Central song with Prince, Andre and Morris. Funky guitar licks and synths that brought Stevie to mind. "Girl you're so hot, such a sexy machine"
3. "I Am You" (1977) From the upcoming Timeless release and freshly mixed, it's absolutely huge. I think this is a great choice to open the new album.
4. "The ? Of U" (1985 Demo) Prince and Eric Leeds, just piano, percussion and sax. A beautiful haunting early instrumental of the song we all know and love. *It seems, this one is 12 keys that we already have but an edited version.
5. "Evolsidog" (1985) Y'all heard the leak. Sounds even better in full and in proper quality! That Parade set is gonna hit like crack. * Length : about 3'30 so quite short. There's a much longer version in the Vault according to Duane's book.
6. "Tick Tick Bang" (1981) Also appearing on the upcoming release. I never quite released due to poor quality boots just how heavy this version is. It's giving pure Sex Pistols and Clash. *It's unclear to me if that one is the same version as the bootleg version we have.
7. "I'll Do Anything" (April 92) This is a version of Prince and the NPG working through the track live with Prince cueing them as bandleader into different parts. Very cool.
8. "Life O' The Party" (2002 Demo) Completely different, shuffle funk gogo vibes and a Camille voice. Even earlier than the version that Candy Dulfer shared. Very cool and raw with different lyrics but the same vocal melodies.
9. "Song Of The Heart" (Instrumental Demo) This played while some fans were invited on stage to dance. Mostly what you'd expect but cool to hear. * We might have already hage that one too ?
10. "The Guilty Ones" (2007) This will be the sleeper hit of the Timeless set, THIS SONG IS EVERYTHING. Super heavy blues rock that is almost giving White Stripes or QOTSA (as references to other rock of that era). This song is massive. Huge drums and guitar, like Fury dialed up
11. "Girls In The Band" (2008) Somewhere between Rock N Roll Love Affair and Peach, it's about a girl who "likes the girls in the band" and who likes to party and likes her drinks strong. It's chuggy blues rock and very cool.
12. "So Bad" (Recorded Jan 14th 2016) Wow. Grooving hip-hop drums and spacey synths, this wouldn't be out of place on AOA or HNR1 albums. Prince sings "I Want You, I Need You So Bad" and sings of a girl who is "texting, asking if I'm alright", after "another full moon". * That one was an ovious choice to put at the end of Timeless but they chose a live track instead. Never expect the incompetent people in charge to make the right choice.
My highlights were definitely I Am You, Evolsidog, Guilty Ones and So Bad. Overall a GREAT listening session! [Edited 6/8/26 7:47am] Fire the 2 impostors from the Prince Estate !
Give us back Troy Carter, Michael Howe & Duane Tudahl.

All the tracks are oredered by recording date, except Tick, Tick, Bang? (Though there was work done on the 1981 version in 1985, but just a new mix IIRC.) . Why is it unclear whether the version played is the 1981 version or a different third version? IIRC one of the tweets asked Casey or Funktopia whether it was the 1981 version and provided a YT link to that version, and the reply was that it was a different track. . Also why would they play a different version of TTB than the one on Timeless, which is reportedly the 1981 version?

One Thing i'm happy for is that they DIDN'T play the new Timeless album. Keep that fresh until it's release. Otherwise the dissapointment (here) would even be worse. Some new fresh unheard songs was a kept promise so to say. Although we have most on boots. "The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves. And wiser people so full of doubts." (Bertrand Russell 1872-1972)

. My guess from what I've read in the reviews is that it's a later version than the 1981 recording we know of, but it still builds on that. I have no idea if this new version was made by Prince in 1981 as well. And, yes, the version used in listening session is the Timeless one. [Edited 6/8/26 9:40am]

It is a pity that we don't have more info about the version of HEAVEN....an edited version of the trax circulating for decades or a much more finilized later shorter version from 1985 (like this famous TTBB version on the forthcomig Timeless album ) [Edited 6/8/26 10:58am]

If at least we get the proper intro to the song and then we'd merge it with the bootlegged version for the extended part I'd be OK-ish.

Well, you wouldn't want to make have to squeeze a full 40 minutes of music on to one CD
Reply w/quote - E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
. Supposedly the version we've had for years includes repeated parts.
Reply w/quote - E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
That is probably true, but there is also a version that is almost 10 minutes long (the full version with extra verses), and Prince's final mix that is around 5-6 minutes long, and other shorter edits for B-side consideration.

Hands down the best song played yesterday was " I am you " early disco funk . It's gonna get a lot of plays in my house when it comes out. My next 2 favorites were " evolsidog " and" life of the party ". Evolisdog it's so cool to hear something new from an era when prince was firing on all cylinders . Life of the party was a new and different take on a song we've know for years. Then there was " So Bad " yes if it was on AOA it would have been simply album filler , but it was cool to hear that even in the later stages of his career he was still making interesting sounding music . The other 2 pre For You tunes were fascinating because up until this point the only stuff I had heard was the junky sounding recordings he made by himself with a boombox , so to hear 2 complete song was pretty darn neat. As for "tick tick bang bang" was it different from the bootleg I've had for years.....I don't know ...but it was sped up and rockin , so it's not dissimilar. Girls in the Band and The Guilty Ones were ok , i've never been a huge fan of Princes original rock songs , they were fine for what they are. It's just that I don't care for what they are.
And as a side note , I briefly spoke with Mr Spicer and he said the reason for the inclusion of How Come U Don't Call Me on Timeless was because of the way the crowd responsed to this performance. [Edited 6/8/26 15:35pm]

That's just so random. Brilliant that the crowd loved it - put it on a live release. They've got a 2016 studio track (So Bad) good to go.

They should’ve included 1 or 2 of those Grand Central tracks instead! Now that we know that the estate in possession of Prince’s earliest studio recordings, they could do a small release like “Prince: the early years 1975-1977” but that’s expecting waaaay too much from them lol
