do the lyrics of purple rain let it down?

I love the song
For me it's never better than the long near twenty min version he played on the 84/85 tour
But while I like cryptic or lyrics that don't seem to make obvious sense, I still think the lyrics are the weak point - they're given so much space, it's disappointing that they don't quite add up or join up even
When I'm listening to it it doesn't matter as I'm just sucked into the vibe and the music
But it bothers me a bit that the words don't seem to cohere
Anyone else?

In case you missed the memo, the song is about forgiveness.
That said, i would like to call a truce with you and also wish you heaven.

Welcome to "the org", nayroo2002… life, it ain't real funky unless it's got that pop

In short, no. The lack of directness of the lyrics are what give it the universality that has stood the test of time.

If he'd left in the verse about buying money, that would have been an issue.

Anyone telling me to close my mind and let THEM guide me because I need a leader is full of shit. Otherwise, the lyrics are fine and I don't find them to be cryptic at all.

I prefer that lyric to what it later became ('let god guide you').

No. Listening to this album as a 14-year-old, when it got to purple rain I didn't want to listen to it because I didn't like slow songs at the time. But the lyrics got me into the song and the music got me into the lyrics and it was a nice interactive moment where I began to enjoy deeper songwriting.

It's so interesting. I've listened to it many times and never get tired of it.
