Is this taken from a full rehersal show or just the one take. It is super cool, better than the released version.

Do we know what else was recorded for the rehearsal?

At least the version I found, the tape speed runs a bit slow, it sounds much better and natural if you speed it up via a DAW (Audacity is an easy free one) until is reaches concert F, with standard tuning practice of A=440, as its key [Edited 9/10/23 14:15pm]

I like how you just presume the tape runs slow. It's fine as is.

I mean, unless the implication is that the band, including the horns and electronic keys/synths, all just for this one performance tuned down their instruments less than a semi-tone, thus not being in tune with either E or F (its original key on the original official release) and collectiely deviating from standard practice A=440 tuning - there really isn't any other logical conclusion to be made here [Edited 9/10/23 14:12pm]

It is fine as is, if one is unbothered with the tape speed not running where it most likely should, taking into account this is a live performance and all the instruments are most likely tuned originally adhereing to A=440hz [Edited 9/10/23 14:55pm]

this is v cool to hear. i had no idea this even made it to the rehearsal stage. its obv the sott band but i wonder why theyd rehearse this when it wasnt on any album... maybe for an aftershow? or just for the hell of it. i wasnt sure it would work that well live but its pretty good. it sounds much more like the 86 funk stuff, like girls n boys, or love n money.

- He also rehearsed it with the Revolution in 86, as documented in "Prince and The Parade and SOTT era studio sessions" book:
"He gave “Crystal Ball” to the group at the time and told us, “Here, learn this,” and we started rehearsing and realized just how technically challenging it was. It’s a continuous piece, like a symphony. We were used to playing four-minute pop songs. I think I was rising to the challenge, as I could write my own charts, but some of the others were ear-players. There was so much going on, and Prince realized this and gave up on playing it live" - Matt Fink

The 87/88 band played those lovesexy medleys which involved lots of quick changes so i doubt theyd have any issues with it.

[Edited 9/12/23 15:26pm] I remember having The Revolution in mind, too when I read that. But maybe this is the rehearsal that Dr. Fink is talking about. After all he was a member of the SOTT-/Lovesexy-Band that followed. NPG Radio:

Exactly, and I think this probably will be the best thing we will get this year, imho. Forget the whole BIG year announcement of that ''Damn & Prunes SDE.'' I am not expecting much from that SDE. I am already far more pleased with this! Real musicians with a heart growing with Prince's throne in era when Prince was super exciting to know and to follow. - There are different parts from exactly 6:00 on... where the horn parts even sound like ''For Love'' from Jill Jones. And from 6:17 it even sounds like a carribean style song. Both these parts are not in the recorded version iirc. From 6:38 it is soooo funky! This part alone could be used to build a whole new a song... Prince on guitar and Levi on bass duelling. A nice Miko solo from 7:22... and from 8:15 that fat Sheila E drum solo... I mean that would be such a cool live element if they ever performed it for an audience. This super complex song is amazing how Prince pulled it off to have all his musicians made it happen. Great Eric and Matt horns too. The girls singing... Gosh I missed that! Now think about a Tony M rap, or Alice Through The Looking Glass... Say what! Great Rehearsal, great sound quality. Thank U to the one who finally made this public.

Can we now also have the full rehearsal? "The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves. And wiser people so full of doubts" (Bertrand Russell 1872-1972)

Love it, one of my favorite songs played live is incredible, wish we had video to go along with it. Hopefully one day, when someone competent purchases the Prince legacy, we might get a bunch of these types of gems. There has to be hundreds of them I would expect given how many great rehersal jams we have already gotten throughout the years via bootlegs.

Ok. I'm apologizing to you. Having followed your original 7% advice and been into audacity, you're right and I was wrong.

No worries, most importantly I just wanted to make sure more people had the oppurtinity in hearing it at what I believe to be the most accurate representation of the audio! It is a really kickass recording isn't it?

Just listened to it...amazing. They nailed it. I wish this had been on the "S.O.T.T" box set. One of my favorite jams by him.
