35 years ago today: LOVESEXY

"Lovesexy" was released on this day 35 years ago.

.

It's probably my 3rd favorite P album, after SOTT and PR.

.

"Alphabet St." is one of the funkiest things he ever recorded. It's in my P Top 10, for sure.

.

Give it a spin today, if you have the chance.

I can remember the first time I heard this album, like it was yesterday.

I went down-town to buy the album on cassette, and bought a load of AA batteries for my Walkman too.

As soon as I got back on the bus home, I put the tape into my Walkman and listened to the whole of side one on my way home.

I miss those days!!!

Lovesexy is still the one, even 35 years later.

Best Prince CD of all time and Anna Stesia is still best song of all time!

What could've been the B-Side???

Cross The Line?

That would have been a banging single.

Yep...its definitely in my top 5, or even top 3 on some days

1. SYMBOL
2. Sign O The Times
3. For You
4. Lovesexy
5. Dirty Mind

#3 through #5 are fluid and interchangeable, depending on my mood

I grew up in the American South, the Bible Belt. So when I went to buy the "Lovesexy" tape (I didn't get a CD player until 1990), the redneck clerk behind the counter scowled at me like I was buying child pornography. He wouldn't even touch the case... I had to hold it up so he could see the price.

.

Oh well. His loss.

I was very much into the aesthetic at the time. I loved the yes heart, the colors and clothing. Loved the "Glam Slam" video, but found "Alphabet St." cheap (which it was, say what you want; it was damn near shot between weather segments at a news station).

Lovesexy is the only tour I ever saw of his. It was a magic experience on all levels.

But some songs took a while to grow on twenty-year-old me back then. "Dance On," "When 2 R In Love," and "eye No" were the "yeeeesh" moments for me. But I still snuck the cassette down ton my work space at night and listened to it a couple of times while on watch.

Today I love the album front to back. There's a mood to it. I don't get the whys of it being on big track on the CD. But I have a tracked CD version, which was released to radio stations. This is different than the German tracked CD. My CD has a fade on the end of every song.

this album inspired his greatest tour IMO

i do love the album, but i dont think its his best, i think the album was rushed a bit, but that doesnt necessarily matter, it has a unique feeling, this feeling of inspiration that the other albums dont have.i always wondered what the earlier mixes sounded like, esp as eric leeds said they were better, but i know it might be a while until we hear those.

It’s a great album, and among my top five ! I love Cat’s and Sheila’s contributions. He seemed to be so incredibly inspired at that time. Thanks for reminding us.

lovesexy gets kinda underrated in a way, cos of the whole story behind the black album, but then i still wish he had released both of them tbh. after a big double album, what would have been wrong with releasing some quickly made funk tracks (well, plus a ballad, a jazz-funk blowout, and a weird rap song)? but then i guess if he didnt pull TBA, he wouldnt have made lovesexy. so hey.

I love Lovesexy...
It came out when I was 17 and it still sounds like Summer.
I remember there was a show here in the UK called Night Network and Brinsley Forde from Aswad had a spot on it going through the new releases.
He played the new video for Alphabet Street and simply said 'Well, he's done it again hasn't he'

Great record

Not one of my favorite albums, it's just meh. Some great songs, some good songs, and the rest I can just leave it. The cover didn't help either, wasn't a fan of it when I bought it, and still does nothing for me today...lol. It did generate a solid tour though, and it's obvious many people still enjoy the heck out of it.

That seems rather short-sighted and juvenile.

Prince undoubtedly would have been told this at the time - Fortunately he learned from this experience and matured.

PS I know what you meant and the cover never prevented me from getting the album. It is however undeniable that the cover had a serious impact on sales.

Only in America!

Europe didn't GAF

Its a great cover though

The design was fantastic in that period

Who knows if another cover would really have sold more records

Not like there were any other obvious singles on therr
