His studio covers are so bad.
And "Bad" is of course, the only cover worth pining for, though if he did it in response to an early studio demo is that really a "cover" per se? Is it positive it didn't make Quincy and MJ go back in the lab for a couple overdubs/requencing after hearing Prince play "bass in the face"?
"Bad" was always the worst MJ era / track so would especially love a reinterpretation / funkier version than the wackness captured on record in 1987. |

You really think any of these are equivalent to the originals, much less better than the OGs? Come on now. Some of these are iconic staples of their genres that really didn't need to be covered by anyone, much less the man whose entire gimmick was based around his original-output.
"La La La Means I Love You" in the "great" cover pile, is this sarcasm? Thom Bell got it picture perfect in the 60s and 70s with this and "Betcha by Golly Wow". I appreciate the sentiment in the context of his era, but even gen-Z kids born yesterday know timeless perfection, he needed to put the perfect originals in a wedding playlist and call it a marriage like the rest of society. A live Nick Cage a la The Family Man piano take at the reception max.
Some "big name" artist does a paint-by-numbers arranged, phoned in Xerox of "Adore" like he did those Thom Bell tracks and you'd all tear them apart unmercifully. Keep your standards 100.
Anyway, I sincerely hope he didn't waste any more time with any further studio cover nonsense, time that could have been better spent on his original material--you know, his trademark: Written, Produced, Arranged and Performed by Prince. Certain "fans" find it unacceptable when he had the nerve to not sing the song himself on record and their opinions are rarely challenged, why is it so egregious to suggest material he didn't even write was completely unneccessary?

He went, what, almost 20 years of his career without releasing one? It was actually pretty unique in retrospect, by the very criteria of your quote box.... would've been nice to carry on the streak is all, it really underlined / bolded his entire concept as an artist. |

Prince's interpretation of Hendrix songs is hit or miss to me. Sometimes it's evident Prince had a little too much sugar in the tank to pull off Jimi's more grueling work. |

I remember being in school in 2016, getting water from the water cooler and thinking to myself "man, eye would love 2 hear Prince cover Adele's Hello". This was when he was on the P&AM tour - if he can blend Dolphin with "Heroes", I'm pretty confident he could ace an Adele song. I'm not a fan of hers by any means, and I don't know why that song, but I would love to hear it regardless eye dont think U heard me . . . |

Prince’s studio covers are generally a mixed bag, though I love his version of ‘Crimson & Clover’. As this is complete fantasy:
Into My Arms - Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds (just know, in the right mindset Prince could have nailed this. In the wrong mindset, however, it would have been an overproduced syrupy mess)
Christmas Card from a Hooker in Minneapolis - Tom Waits (in falsetto)

Agreed!I would love it if any of these existed in the vault, I also hope for a 90s NPG version of Villanova Junction (They played it live and rehearsed it , so this isnt so out of the box)

"The Way You Make Me Feel" is more of the groove they could duet on, not "Bad," in my opinion.
And yeah, him soloing on "Earth Song" or even "Stranger in Moscow" would've been fanfuckintastic.
And actually, why not get him to solo on "Scream?" It had a solo anyway. That could've been the real collab. Janet. Michael. Prince. Jam. Lewis.
