Prince Studio Recordings Tracker *2022 UPDATE*

caption_waiting.png
Hi everyone. It's been a little while since I last posted here. I hope you have been keeping well.

TL:DR

The spreadsheet I've been working on has been updated. Link: welcome2thedawn.org. Enjoy.

Background
Firstly, here is a bit of info for anyone who missed my original thread on this topic. This time last year I uploaded a spreadsheet that I had been working on to a cloud drive. It was a list of Prince's studio tracks along with details such as recording dates, release information and various other notes. At the time the list covered recordings from 1973-1989, however my goal was to keep adding details until it contained all of Prince's known recordings made throughout his career. (my previous thread: https://prince.org/msg/7/467260).

Although I still have a fair way to go, I have prepared an updated version which is now available for download.

So, what's new?

* The latest update includes...
* 5 more years worth of additional recordings (1973-1994).
* This includes the NPG era, Come, The Gold Experience, all the way up to Exodus.
* Many additional versions and remixes of songs that were missed from the previous list.
* A total of 2719 rows of data (the previous version included 1287 by comparison).
* Separate columns for basic tracking dates and update (the previous version was a mash up of both).

* Release dates and record label information.
* A citations section (which requires a lot more work, but I've made a start)

Previously, I had hosted this spreadsheet on a Mega cloud drive. However as of today this spreadsheet (along with any future updates) will now be available for download at welcome2thedawn.org. A website that I'm hoping to develop into a useful resource site, but for now it'll serve nicely as a hub for this spreadsheet project. (I'm not much of a web developer, but it'll be a fun project for me to learn more).

More questions that you may have...

Only 5 more years worth?
You lazy mothaf**ker!
If, like me, you are keen to see this project finished then please do not worry. I have actually done a lot more than is included in this update. I have copied across basic information for all of Prince's songs up to 2016, however a lot of it is unorganised and requires more detail before it'll be fit for purpose. Please bear with me. I promise to get this done as soon as I can.

I sent you corrections and updates that haven't been included...

Since my original post on this subject, the feedback I have had has been incredible. Many people got in touch with me offering to help me out, including a handful of wonderful researchers who offered me lots of additional details. To those people, I can assure you that I have chat logs saved on my PC, I have many many screenshots saved on my phone. Your contributions haven't been forgotten. I have been working really hard getting this ready for today, but I promise that all of your contributions will be included in due course. I can't thank you enough and please keep them coming.

Why is this spreadsheet full of so many stupid errors?

At over 2700 rows long, I'd be gobsmacked if there wasn't. If you see any, please get in touch. Org note, Twitter DM, Discord, email, anything. Just get my attention.

Any more thoughts on what else you'd like to include?

As far as citations go, I'm kind of working backwards. My main sources of information have been PrinceVault.com, Duane Tudahl's latest books and Scififilmnerds's blog. (https://chronologicalprincerecordingsindex.blogspot.com). What I hope to do once all the tracks have been included is go back through the older books on the subject (Turn It Up, DMSR, Days Of Wild, The Vault) as well as all the Uptown and Controversy fanzines, and try to find all the earliest mentions of songs to build up a timeline. Similarly, I'd also like to include details of when unreleased tracks first began circulating (where possible). That sort of history fascinates me.

Thank You

Again, just like last year, I'd like to thank the usual crowd of who have done all the leg work over the years. Neversin, Per Nilsen, Duane Tudahl, jooZt Mattheij, Scififilmnerd, SilentMikey, all the staff from Uptown and Controversy magazine, Eric Leeds, Michael Van Huffel, the staff at Sunset Sounds, former band / staff members who have shared valuable information in the past.

However I'd also like to thank say a special thank you to everyone who reached out and offered me help on this project since it launched last year. I know at least a couple or you wished to keep your involvement quite, but you know who you are and I'm really grateful for everything you've helped me with so far.

I really hope this project will grow into a really useful resource for fans both new and old. If you have any feedback then please feel free to get in touch. I also hope that many of the red and yellow tags on this list will begin turning green sooner rather than later.

All the best.
VC

"Unreleased" doesn't mean "not circulating among bootleggers". It means not officially released for commerical sale.

Hi love2thenines.

I believe that the version that is in circulation is the one recorded at 'Sound 80' studios, which is labelled as 'circulating'. There are a couple of other recordings which have yet to leak which are labelled as 'unreleased'. I hope this helps.

This is a bit speculative but in this article, Bobby Z is quoted as saying, “Prince just took out his little cassette and played us a demo he’d written. It was ‘1999’.” This would have been mid-late February 1982, given the timeline of when the Controversy Tour hit ‘the south’ and when HBO aired the Nostradamus film. Would that fit in with your list?

Great work by the way, something to refer to along side Prince Vault and Duane’s books.

This is excellent, and I'm still digesting it!

Minor thing: on the Google Spreadsheet version "My Drawers" is incorrectly attributed to The Glamorous Life album instead of Ice Cream Castle.

Also: I don't see any mention of the Vanity 6 "Manic Monday" -- Brenda Bennett gave an interview a couple of years ago and made mention of its existence. See this thread for discussion: https://prince.org/msg/5/453336

Lastly: Very little listed of unreleased Apollonia 6 demos -- do you have any insight/clarification? Seems odd given how much of Sheila E's debut album was originally intended for Apollonia. Duane's book also makes mention of an unreleased 7" edit of Happy Birthday Mr. Christian, the existence of which is bolstered by the recording of Apollonia introducing the song on track B6 of Syndicate: https://princevault.com/i..._Syndicate

Hi Strongoxman.

Thank you very much for those tips. I've fixed 'My Drawers' and will upload the correction shortly. I'll look into Vanity's Manic Monday and those other bits and pieces when I get a chance.

Thanks again. If you notice anything else please get in touch. wink
