Thanks for the recommendations!

Harts seems pretty cool-maybe doesn't have the big tunes but the dude can definitely play some chops on the guitar!

I've actually reminded myself of one too...Jamie Lidell.

A massive Prince fan too and his Compass lp is brilliant.

Joris, sorry, but you're full of shit.
I bet you haven't listened to any of his records from the first to the last track.
Yes, there are some songs that make me cringe, but so are there a heap of Prince songs where I silently vomit inside my mouth.

I happen to know the kid personally.
(And so do about 20 'old' hardcore Dutch Prince fans, because they recognise a lot of what they've seen/heard before.)
He's more of a musician (as Prince defined, real music by real people) then 99.99% of his generation out there.

I've been to 50+ of his gigs in the past 5-6 years.
One of them was almost 4,5 hrs (Nieuwjaarsoptreden 2019, Paradiso)
Another 3 were during the 'Live in your living room' gigs in New York City, where we afterwards hung out in bars until the early morning.
Another one was in Antwerp on the day P died. He was full of tears, came to me to comfort me and played a ad-hoc Prince tribute during his show.

His shows have one common denominator: He wow's the crowd.

But hey... you've got your opinion, I've got mine.

You can find some great performances of Jett Rebel on my youtube chanel: https://www.youtube.com/c...KXYu61mzFw

Check the last one, 'Cry Me A River, Bleed Me An Ocean'

LOL you're full of shit man. But you can have him and his shitty 'high school cover band' quality music.
Nobody in NL or abroad cares for him or his shitty music that's why he has no relevant carreer.
The only reason people desperately keep hyping him in NL is because NL has nothing else to deliver in the music department.

Eefje De Visser is fantastic though !

Jack White is the only one I really see as coming close. He's an amazing musician, a really underrated and funky drummer. "I've Got You Surrounded (With My Love)" off his latest record is very prince-like to me, perhaps my favorite White track of all-time.

Absolutely!

That song is sooooooooo good.

Where Prince wanted to be perfect/have perfection al over his later recordings,

Jack White is a master in his own interpretation of sloppyness in sound/ rawness in production, and freshness is writing.

The record industry once had a vision for good music, but it developed into money machines of all kinds of bad taste.

Still there might be (a) guy(s) like Prince popping up again.

No one really knows for sure of course.

Today, for me, there is none.

They are there, but they don't sell I guess (maybe only to the older "Jazz" crowds)
Bad EDM that all sound the same and fakers and corny biters like Bruno Mars are easily more marketable to an audience with a attention span of a gnat. shrug

World class talent isn't marketable anymore it seems that's why there aren't any huge popstars anymore like MJ, Madonna or Prince but only these 15 minute flash in the pans.

I think you hit the nail on the head with the last sentence. It seems genuine superstars aren't encouraged or allowed to grow any more. There was a time when an artist would develop and grow over several albums before hitting the jackpot. These days it seems you have to be a vital sensation singing a cover and that's it. I guess those of us who grew up with Prince,Madonna,Bruce,Mj etc in our teens really had the best of it. I will definitely check out everyone's recommendations but would love to find someone who really encompasses pop/funk/electro whilst playing a mean guitar and bass too.

The era of music that Prince lived in and had to fight through was imho the best there was.

Think about this;

Music - Pop & Rock etc - as we here all know it is actually still very young.

What... 60/70 year old maybe ?

This is how I see it;

Once upon a time black people brought/ sadly had to drag rhythm and blues overseas with them to the new Americas,

while the new conquerers of America still played their own folk music and ditto dances threy brought from the Old World.

Rock 'n roll distilled from that later on, moved overseas to the UK where pop music really was invented the way we/most of us know it by heart (now).

Pop & Rock underwent many genres in the UK (EU and America influenced included, but mostly invented in the UK - let's be honest).

In the eighties pop went back and forth to the US with influences from the EU etc.

Then came MTV who heavily influced pop music, right from the States.

Then there was the internet and all it's developments, and you did not really had to learn an instrument (anymore) to make any sorts of music.

At the same time in the late eighties the industry moved 'down' to machine-ready-made-matrixed light hits brought to us by the good looks of boys and girls bands, with basically few musical talents.

All that driven and decided by men in suits only looking at tables, charts, graphs, just to gain (more) money than ever.

So nowadays music is everywhere. Revivals are faster than seconds.

In an advertisement driven society, music has become somehow subordinate.

Music festivals that started to become huge from the early seventies on, are nowadays 'events' where music is a background element to spice up experiences.

Live performances since the videoclip age has become more of a theatrical performance than a musical experience from musicians who play instruments; you really wanted to see what they could play and how they brought their recordings to live, dancing was optional. (We listened more to live shows in the seventies. Remember 'live' albums?)

(And I did not even mentioned the influece of the revivals of musicals on contemporary pre-chewed music...)

With knowing all that, the music industry was able to pull all the strings just up to the mid nineties.

They had a good decade in the seventies where they provided the world with pretty much good and talented music, chosen and pushed by them (more or less).

Then pop or rock or whatever music could be made and developed by everyone on computers, and thrown on the internet, hoping to make it. Also gave possibilities to new unpopular genres as underground and noise etc, but they mostly stayed there.

Music in general today is reduced in addition to our image driven societies.

We live more in an image driven world than in an informative world (imho).

Information is being believed as false or untrue or fake... just like most of the music of this age - to me. Anyways...

So pop music as you like has more or less come to a sort of slow dying end, but it actually will never dissapear.

It will remain excisting and re-developping though the evolution of technolgy - possibly, or not.

So guys with the talents of Prince might appear again one day, but it will be different in all it's forms and use.

His debut album "Daydreamer" (2014) was amazing...the Prince influence was strong on that one...Harts said it was after that lp that P summoned hin to come to Paisley Park to work together, but P passed not to long after...similar situation as Mononeon. another great young talent

Was thinking today that there's a real lack of super talented, all singing, all dancing, multi instrumentalists who write their own material too these days in the Prince mould. Why is that?????? I guess Bruno Mars is probably the closest but are there any others? It seems it's kinda gone out of Vogue these days. We obviously had D'angelo and Lenny but any other current singers to recommend? It seems like there's just an abundance of singer's doing The Weeknd style edm but where have all the dynamic performers gone who really rock a show?

Dutch artist Jett Rebel writes & records as much music as Prince did. And he does everything by himself. All instruments, arrangement, producing, recording.
He released 8 albums in the past 10 years, and he's got almost double that on the shelf.

Dunno why his talent isn't recognised more then it currently is. shrug

That might change though, since he's the producer of the upcoming album from Hall & Oates.

Will have to check him out. Has he released any albums here in USA?

Good morning children...take a look out your window, the world is falling...

A mix of old and new:

Jacob Collier

Billy Joe Armstrong / Green Day

Sufjan Stevens

Mike Oldfield

I admit, none of them as famous as Prince, but these guys know how to hold various instruments !
