. I rememeber that when the ATWIAD album came out, some reviewers referred to "The Ladder" as "Purple Rain part 2". . Also, the whole story line of the movie Graffiti Bridge is clearly modelled after the PR movie. So, it is a bit easy to say that Prince didn't like the concept of sequels. . But in general, he always seemed to search for something new, not to build on previous ideas, even making radical changes between albums during his peak years in the 80s (although I'm sure we can still find some examples in of rehashed themes or ideas in his songs if we look closely).

I mean, if we're going down that road, we can talk about how all of ATWIAD used the Purple Rain blueprint to a T.

.
Yeah dude, all that, huh huh

See my reply just above this one

But see, all of you are going down the road of "what songs are similar" not what songs are sequels in a narrative baseline. We can compare types of songs all day.

Songs can be sequels in many ways, not only in your way!

It's about my way, it's about what the OP said. So you know... there's that.

Not really a sequel, but I feel like "If I Was Your Girlfriend" is a reply to Kate Bush's "Running Up That Hill".

. Songs can be sequels in many ways, not only in your way! .

.

And that is the point.

.

Before this question can be answered we need to agree on when is a Prince song a sequel knowing that Prince did not seek to directly make sequels.

.

Can a sequel be in the form of a reprise? Some reprises are just that, so not sequels. However, New Power Generation Pt II is a sequel. Sure, NPG fades out and Pt II can be added to make it look like one song, but the sequel has entirely new content, new structures and these differences reflect that this is a result of what has occured between the end of NPG and the beginning of Pt II - be it in the album or the movie.

.

Can a sequel be just because of a similar location, such as a barn, and linked analogies, such as a boss complaining about a lazy teenager working part time and a club owner complaining about one of his performers being too self indulgent? Perhaps, but not in the case of IWD4U and Raspberry beret. The young shop assistant is not the Kid and the girl in the song is not the type to be easily led by Morris Day. The only link is Raspberry Beret was inspired by a deleted scene orginally written with Prince and Vanity in barn in the rain.

.

Can a common theme make songs sequels? Not normally and not without specific references to make the link. It can be argued that Annie Christian and Lady Cab Driver are linked by reference to cabs. They also are thematically linked (hiding from the outside world in cabs) with a progression in the story between the songs and with the sequel.

Your post has me thinking Funknroll could be considered a sequel and that's not at all what the OP was talking about.

Why do you think anything I said means Funknroll is a sequel? That it was released on two albums, one as a remix, makes it no different to other remixes - Can a remix be a sequel - sometimes if it is not just a musical remix (like the AOA version) but that it instead takes the story themes from the original song and develops these further in the sequel.

.

Why do you think this is not at all what the OP was talking about - the OP only asked which songs have sequels without any explanation of what they consider to be a sequel at all.

Your post has me thinking that there are remixes that can be considered sequels. For example The Crime, The Passion, The Rapture in the Scandalous Sex Suite

Allow me to chime in mate
I consider a sequel a continuance of a song. It doesnt have to say part 2 either
I guess it can be a song with a similar story or a song that continues with the same characters.

That is what I thought you meant - A broad definition but one where different story or different characters means it is not a sequel.
