I wanna think something like Solo could work for a Bond theme. Perhaps with just a touch more pop sensibility to it? That, Strays of the World, Planet Earth, Gold, Last December, they all have the epic and cinematic quality to them I think. Could they be refashioned into a Bond theme? Maybe. I keep thinking back to TP's mention of Goldeneye because that, and The World Is Not Enough, exemplify the Bond themes to me. Something major, epic, distinctly in theme, a very specific cocktail of international spy movie magic. Very different to the garbage Madonna turned out, which if past is precedent, could allow for, idk, Wedding Feast or Jughead to be a Bond theme.

Hmmm, you know. "Solo" set to some new music could be interesting. I'd like to hear that in general. Something moody, lots of strings and big cinematic elements.

"PLanet Earth" I can see, without the mid-section.

Dare I say, a little bit of new production and "Damn U" has the bones for it. Take out some of the more comforting moments and make 'em moody.

I think Damn U is a great suggestion! It has the cheekiness that many of the Bond themes also have. Take out some of those comforting moments and introduce some story elements from the film itself. Doesn't it sort of fit the relationship Bond often has with his female leads? Love it.

Power Fantastic, if you did more of a cool, indie version of Bond. Or maybe changed the name to Pussy Fantastic? There's a Bond villainess name for you.

Of course, we already have Pussy Control, a Bond girl name if I ever heard one.

Bond songs are normally written specifically for the film after the synopsis/narrative of the film is shared with the songwriter so that the newly written piece actually fits the film.

And they have to have a certain musical element or motif in them that's used in most Bond themes.
I don;t think that kind of boudaries would work well with Prince.

Prince also did a 'new' theme for The Simpsons when they wanted him on it, but that was discarded along with his whole episode plan.

I don't know. Maybe the younger Prince would have balked at those restrictions but I think the older, more mature Prince would have played along with it.

That's twice Prince was overlooked then in favor of Danny Elfman. Prince must've really hated elves.

Kirk - "I bring word from Elrond of Rivendell". Prince *freaks out*, thinking Agent Smith is coming to town. (There was that issue over labels with barcodes attached to his clothing?!)

It's called humor. Maybe you don't get the references or juist don't find it funny. Prince loved the Matrix, fired Kirk a few times for not doing his every bidding. And 'Elfman' is a play on words, and somebody following me on here is a HUGE Elfman fan. LOTR is the most famous lore btw. Also about the labels.... https://www.gq.com/story/prince-stories

I'll chime in with as many cultural references as I like. Not my fault if other people overjudge because they're not knowledgable.

OHHHH, yes. Maybe a few production elements removed. But can you image that with some Bond-y strings and that twangy surfin' type guitar we hear in some of the songs? Hell, that's even a good title for a Bond movie.

Well, the thread is kinda dumb neutral . Because if P had been asked it would have made definitive news back in the day. So he wasn't asked, thus everything is a hypothetical. But to be serious and on point...

There is no preexisting P song that would have fit the bill. Just to tackle OP's few examples. D & P, as a duet would have been too saccharine. Still great song. Chains O' Gold sounds too ostentatious, even for Bond material, maybe due to falsetto, or the overall 'wall of sound' production. Again, great song. Crystal Ball would never have worked with the helium vocals and hiccuppy rhythms.

The only songs that could've worked as Bond theme musically, are Insatiable, Damn U, Scandalous. None of them have lyrics suited at all to any Bond film. Being too sexual, instead of merely sensual.

Well Winehouse was a drunk. And although Prince was addicted to drugs, he got work done.

Either way: I agree about Batman. But the better songs were written new, IMO. I don't think it's the weakest of a decade considering the mesh and old song rehash of Graffiti Bridge was a year later. And do we mean the 80s in general? Or from 88-98? Either way, I think it's a strong album; stronger than GB but on level with Diamonds and Pearls. Anyhoo...

I do think if Prince was given a purpose, he'd have lived up to it. He was versatile enough to record not only every kind of song around, but write one specifically for an artist's genre. I can see him being fully capable, based on that, of writing a Bond theme. I'm not sure it'd be as Bond-y as "Goldeneye," Live and Let Die," "Skyfall" or even "A View to a Kill" which seems to be a great mesh of Bond elements as well as Duran's aural aesthetic (and was a #1 for them).

I can see it being a PRINCE song, ya know, but he was good at borrowing, paying homage, or whatever. So if he had to put some Bond shit into a song, he could've done it.

I'm interested to know if he was ever asked, and passed on it for whatever reason. Not sure anyone would know, or they just haven't said so yet.

He did do an orchestral score for Batman soundtrack, so I recall. But Tim Burton passed on it, favoring Danny Elfman instead. That didn't stop Prince though, who resorted to rollerskating to get it out of his system.

soundsof71 - accgoo - Prince Batdance on skates!

There must be video matirial of this in the vautl somewhere. Just imagine.

Good lawd, i want to see him move on rollerskates... wink)))

I don't think Prince's style was anywhere near a Bond theme.

I can see chord progressions like Stays of the World, Planet Earth or Dance With The Devil fitting in (particularly in the post Casino Royal erea), but Bond themes are very controlled and I don't think Prince would have conformed.

I think the closest an artist has got to stamping their own sound on a Bond theme was A-ha's 'Living Daylights' and even then, John Barry got a partial writing credit for the string arrangements.

I'd say "A View To A Kill" is very Duran Duran, and equally fits 007.

Both ''The Future'' and ''Arms Of Orion'' sound (very) Bond-ish (to me).

I think “What’s My Name” could have been used. It’s on similar lines to “You know my name”, by Chris Cornell from Casino Royale (details on the writing of that https://www.007.com/writi...heme-song/ ).
