Let us imagine there was no Lovesexy, as the Black Album was officially released in 88. What would he have chosen as singles (if at all?). Would he have toured the album? Would we have received the industrial funk of Batman next?, or was that not necessary then?

Def referencing Kurtis there. Which is probably the "realest" bit of the track. I think the song is purposefully awkward and intended as a joke/parody. I get it but still think its properly deemed the least of LS/BA.

That "laaa la la-la" part is a nod to Kurtis Blow's "If I Ruled The World", no?

A rapper tryin' to sing...

Sheesh! Can't believe I never put that together. Thanks.

Prince sings it in a white minneapolis accented voice throughout... one of his comedy voices that you often hear in rehearsals when he's joking around. He's playing the part with akwardness for a laugh, it just goes over some people's heads because they don't understand when his humor.

But the guitar lines in this are killer liquid funk midnight oil. Make no mistake.

The best part of the song..."Shall we go back? Yeah! Let's go"...and then that killer guitar. Fonky.

The idea was to release it anonymously with little or no promotion.
If you take any of this seriously, you're a bigger fool than I am.

I think "Le Grind" would have been the first and only single. It's catchy enough for R&B radio.

I don't think the other songs would have worked as singles.

Probably "When 2 R In Love".

But, then, he sped up that drum track and made "Alphabet St."

(of course after adding some strategec cowbell)

Peter Beyt

Good Day to you all. My name is Peter and I made this video with Prince back in the late 80s. I worked at Editel, which was one of the premier edit house in the day, he had shot all the footage at his place and showed up one Monday night with a box of tapes because he knew of my effects work. Remember this was before the computers and software of today, I had to layer each letter in the video one at a time. I enjoyed a healthy working relationship with him, a nice guy, incredibly talented. I still have other versions of the video with more messages in it but we felt we wouldn't get away with it as much as we did. I'm so glad this is available to all, thanks.

It was done before things were done in software. The room I was working in cost about 2 million at the time and everything had a piece of hardware to do the job. The ADO (Ampex Digital optics) would move, resize and rotate a video frame. The A64 (Abekas Digital Disk Recorder) would let me layer one ADO move at a time, no backing up. Video came off of 1" tape machines through a GVG-300 switcher all controlled by a CMX 3400 based on a PDP-11 computer. So old school by todays standards !

There are many messages hidden in the video and yes @ 26 seconds you cans see him disappear into the center of the screen and "don't buy the black album, I'm sorry" is down the center line.

Maybe some of you peeps read that on the tube, but it was new to me!

Thank you for that. smile

Wish we could get hands on that video with more hidden messages.

Well, his bad trip certainly had him jumping the horse for (more hidden) messages back then.

All the LOVE for the song Lovesexy is great to see. The voice transformation is one of my favorite P moments.

I think this song captures all the things I love about him, especially his weirdness.

EddieC

Glam Slam was never a favorite of mine either, the chorus is jarring IMO. I do like the instrumental part with the violins (near the end iirc?) though.

It's one of my favorite bits, but it's not part of Glam Slam for me. Sure, it's part of the track on the CD, and on the digital copies I listen to now--but Lovesexy was an album I first listened to on cassette, and thus when I listened to it all the time it was on a cassette player. And my cassette deck had Automatic Music Sensor capabilities, where it would search for gaps in the music and let you fast-forward or rewind to choose a specific track. Anna Stesia was track I would pick to listen to individually, so I'd hit play/fast forward to get to it, and it would start with that instrumental flourish bit. So, I still think of it as being the beginning of Anna Stesia. I think if I were rewinding it would start with the actual piano of Anna Stesia, so it was kind of like I had two versions of Anna Stesia on one tape.

Didn't matter, they were both good.
