I'm starting to really like MPLS Sound.

Decent album. A bit commercial. He was delusional thinking he would have a hit then. But very nice album.

All you others say Hell Yea!! woot!

I wouldn't call it delusional; I believe all artists hope that their next work will be widely accepted. It wasn't that the product wasn't good; it was that he was too good for the times.

I agree. A nice album.

Welcome to "the org", laytonian… come bathe with me.

I mean, I like MPLSound well enough, but come on, let's not delude ourselves... MPLSound has got to be in the lower tier of Prince's work for almost everyone - even those who like it, as I do - .... he was 'too good for the times'? Hmm, not buying that one.

It just wasn't a very inspired album, fun as it is... and he was never going to have a 'hit' with any of those songs.

I've always been a fan of it, tbh. It might be a kitschy 2000s pastiche of '80s Prince, but it's a *good* pastiche, lol.

I hated this album for years. It was only recently I learned to appreciate it. It's not great, but it's decent.

In fact, I use this album as an example of why I occassionally revisit Prince projects that I hate -- it shows that sometimes I'll change my mind and discover something new to add to my totation.

Prince's(R.I.P.) LotusFlow3r?MPLSOUND album debut @ NUMBER TWO on the Billboard HOT 100 charts with ONLY ONE RETAILER TARGET.! That was UNPRECEDENTED for an artist that had been in the business OVER THIRTY YEARS @ the time. I call THAT A HIT!!!

The ONLY reason it didn't debut @ number One was because Keith Urban label BOUGHT his sells!!!!

Anywho it reminds me of the launching of LotusFlow3r.com(whom I attended a sneak preview @ the Tavis Smiley benefit show that Prince(r.i.p.) performed@). Then was fortunate to attend the THREE SHOWS IN ONE NIGHT album launching extravaganza @ the then Nokia Center in BEAUTIFUL Downtown LA.

Its fine. The sampled Linn Drums that irk me about it instead of it being authentic from the machine itself. Sounds plastic. THere are some good songs though especially Dance 4 Me, Valentina and Old School Company

Straight Jacket Funk Affair
Album plays and love for vinyl records.

didn't someone (john blackwell?) say, a while before it's release that it was a bit like Controversy?

if so, I guess prince changed the tracklist, like with so many projects.

maybe some of those songs were moved over to "20Ten" since some of those do have a BIT of a
Controversy vibe, with some imagination.

still, I like this album for what it is. never really listen to it in full, but love most of it's parts.

Never B Another Like Me

Dance 4 Me
Old Skool Company

No More Candy 4 U

that's some decent songs right there.

it was a hit but I will remind everyone that The Eagles set the bar for the one retailer with "Long Road out of Eden" in 2007 easily debuting at number one, to date is certified at seven million, technically 3.5 million since it was a double record even though priced as one cd. Eagles going through Walmart and Prince through target.

What does that have to do with the price of tea in China?

that it was done to great success prior to the Lotus release

I haven't been able to get into that one...but I am sure I will in time.

I love that about Prince albums...some that wrote off when they first came out will hit me on a future date. Planet Earth has been that album for me ever since I picked up the vinyl copy last year. It's been my go-to for the last few months.

But NOT by a stand alone artist like Prince(r.i.p.). Which makes him unique in an industry that's hard to break through as an independent artist.

Dance 4 Me is the standout track for me. Chocolate Box has some high energy, but the chorus is a bit cringe-y . . . and No More Candy 4 U is fun.

The rest . . . some middle of the road ballads, and Valentina is just plain odd.

Among Prince's Bottom 5 albums. If these songs came from someone else, you would not care for them.
