I like articles like this, particularly about Prince’s use of drum machines. I just want to know what his first drum machine was, the one Owen Husney bought him in 1977, used first on Neurotic Lover’s bedroom.

It's interesting that his drum patterns in the '80s were so orinal, inventive and ahead-of-their-time, likw nothing else you were hearing on the radio...

But when he returned to drum programming around the for Emancipation era his beats were bland, stale and behind-the-times.

On a side note: I’m surprised that it’s still manufactured
and sold for 500 bucks.

maybe because both machines are analog,i think linn was 1 of the first sample based digital drum machines

Roland? They've started to reproduce a lot of the old machines after people were making software emulators, and you can find online versions to play with. https://html5drummachine....m-machine/

One candidate for his first drum machine is the Ace Tone Rhythm Producer FR-15.

It couldn’t be the Roland CR-78, as that came out in 1978, and Owen Husney bought Prince his first drum machine and used it on Neurotic Lover’s Bedroom In 1977.

It appeared on “Wouldn’t You Love To Love Me” too :nod:

I think the demo version of “Do Me Baby” was a Roland though.

I looooove the infant years of drums machines pre-LM1, I don’t know what is it about them, despite their limited range, they had so much appeal.
