In the end of the day, he left some brilliant songs and is recognized as a genius, but I believe most people agree that he released stuff that seems rushed and not compatible with a guy of his genius.

Read Graffiti Bridge. Which other artist in the history of music has had their careers highlight and low point on the same album up to that point? (Joy In Repetition and NPG pt I-II). And it's a honest question.

.

Good example. In the same album we have ´Question of U´ and ´Tick tick bang´ (maybe some people here love it, but it´s the kind of song that I cant imagine a non fan enjoying)

shes very honest, and actually right.

prince did work in a hurried way.

apart from a few albums, he wasnt really interested in spending time on anything

he just hit when inspiration struck, got it down, and moved on.

he was not interested in thinking about what he was doing too long, it was more, this is my new thought, my new idea, let me just do it, whatever it is.

sades records are very thought out - not that everything SHE did or does is brilliant either tbh but its obv that she tried to get it to sound good. prince OTOH didnt care about polish or engineering, he was almost disinterested in making anything sound good from an engineering or production standpoint. he was only interested in the musical content, by and large.

neither approach is necessarily the right or best one.

but you listen to 80s sade and you do get a certain level of quality sounding records.

princes albums often did not sound that good.

and thats cos he recorded in weird places, quickly, and didnt care about them once he was done.

in and out, end of lol.

I absolutely agree.

Thing also is that Prince (apparently) was utterly competitive, and on every level.

It seemed as if he wanted to proof all the time to whomever was around him how fast and good he was. Ànd he was absolutely good, let's be honest.

I believe that his lack of communication demanded a nearly dictator position, just to be sure heb could do whatever fast and only on his terms.

The warners dispute... it's something i look different at, more and more.

Sade's records are good to very good to me.

Her first album and ''Love Is Stronger Than Pride'' are both absolute classics.

But then again, it sounds strange to hear her saying this about Prince (which is true), but she on the contrary, barely recorded something altogether - imho.

I would've loved it more if it came from another artist. wink But that's just me...

Sure, the album has Question of U and Tick Tick Bang, but there's also tracks on it that aren't as good. And he even had the nerve to all but destroy one of his masterpieces, Joy In Repetition. I've been waiting for the version with the intro intact ever since.

.

As to a song you cannot imagine anyone loving, I'm sure you meant Graffiti Bridge...

Actually, I mentioned ´Tick tick bang´ as one of his weakest songs (IMO, course). But Graffiti Bridge is very cheesy also.

.

I always loved ´Joy in Repetition´ and I never realized it was heavily edited. Now I am curious.

For me, 'Shake!' is the weakest link on GB. At least the title track does what it came to do. Shake just feels like a commercial break.

She is right. Really, she is saying she should let go a little bit. Prince was so free flowing creatively. He never was stuck in one sound like Sade is

agreed.

.

Sade - the singer & the group - MASTERED that "soul/smooth-jazz-ish" sound..

that is & has always been their sweet spot & I have yet to hear anyone else who does is as well as they do & have done.

.

I believe that if anyone in the group Sade had been as prolific as Prince was, they would have left the group & gone solo & done their own thing.

.

for the record : I have been a HUGE Sade fan since day 1, I have been crushing on her for almost 40 years now......

I think the two can’t be compared even if they co-existed, one was more concerned about conveying musicianship & the other was more concerned about conveying lyricism & mood. Both were innovative in their own right Prince excelled at exploring musical landscapes, Sade excelled at tapping into deeply personal lyrics. Neither can do what the other is able to bring out, by Prince’ admission himself, he said he listened to artists that do what he can’t, Sade & Cocteau Twins were among the ones he listened to at the time. By the same token as highlighted earlier, Sade is not able to make the same music he did. Both breathed new life & magic into music, also saying Sade is jealous is ridiculous & embarrassing.

I read that she & Prince did record in 1989, don’t quote me though.

I’ve also heard this before, I’ll have my friend ask his Professor who was P’s engineer at the time.
