So true! It's a shame as pretty much every other Era and look matched. Mind you after such terrible personal tragedy I guess that maybe he was a little off his game. Still looking great but perhaps the usual matching up was missing as he was probably a little lost?

What was his look during the 'Chocolate Invasion' and 'The Slaughterhouse' ?

Cause these albums only had simple graphic (front) artwork.

And yes I know how Prince looked like in 2004,

but did planned to have a certain look for these projects ?

In Kim's book she described cutting the rave hair.. I haven't got access to the book but if anyone else does this could answer that question

It's the editing in the Rave un2 the Year 2000 that made that era his most visually intimidating.

(I'm gonna regret posting this)

I don't believe these were his intentions, but he's got this intimidating vibe about him during his Rave era photoshoots. Like some kind of darkness embodies him, like his next album's gonna be 666 or Thriller or something. Lol thoughts?

This is photoshopped to the (cheek)bone.
These irises aren't real.

Is that another ignominy coming from Steve Parke?
Lawd, I hate every single one of the pictures he took.
He always made Prince look like a psychopath,
or at least like a subject who wants to tear the photograph's head off,
and/or the people who are looking at them.

Then again, who picked them?

Post Jeff Katz, I'm really not a fan of his portraits.
He appears lifeless.
I find the second half of the nineties just bad,
most of the photo sessions reek of pure narcissism.

If only because there are a ton of them,
at a time when he was well under the public's radar
and pissing off every fan (except for the nutcase zealots).
It speaks of shattered self-confidence: "yeah, I still look awesome".

Then why the permanent long face?

Greta Garbo trapped in her Xanadu.

How did we get from people intimidated by Prince's `dark` Rave era (ever checkec batman?) to Sharon Stone photoshops?

I'd say: buy a LED flaslight, to the first group.

The Sharon-thing can go away.

Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

Apologies for an egotistic clarification: My photoshop comment concerns the OP's picture.
The Sharon Stone portrait isn't over-retouched (probably just the usual pimple): she got eyebags and pores, and looks pretty human.

The "intimidating" Prince picture has plastic in lieu of skin, and abnormal eyes.
I can't think of a truly intimidating picture of Prince, especially around the Rave Era.

As for the Batman era, maybe the pirate one, on the cover of "The Future" single?

The most "intimidating", meaning threatening, picture that comes to mind is the Purple Rain cover.
But in a fantastic, menacing sexy way.

Actually, even better: the inner sleeve of 1999's Disc 2, you know, the tushy one.
One would have to think twice before joining this creature under the sheets (granted, most of us wouldn't).

Fantastic pick up on Steve Parke. Prince often looks closed off in Parke’s repertoire.

I fully agree.

But isn't the one deciding which to our narcistic Prince himself ?

But anyway, i never liked Jeff Katz photography either.

Too much focused on perfection only.

Just 'pretty', not much of a story to tell.

-

My thought is that both Prince & Katz are resposible for these heavy photoshop era shots.

Ah this one. I like this photo of both. Kim's stare at the camera looks blank but also like there are a hundred things in her head. Prince looks so unposed, as if he is meditating. Kim is so unfazed by princes good looks.. aura .. she looks so calm. Maybe 4his is why they worked for so long..
