That's a good question. You should resurrect him and ask.

Did Prince and sly ever record?? Or did they have a fall out before they got a chance to?

Wasn't there a story of Prince going to wherever Sly was staying at the time and Sly wouldn't even open the door when Prince showed up? It might just be conjecture, who knows.

I've read that Sly never really cared for P. I remember reading in an 80's interview where Sly said ;"P wants to be collard greens, but he's really spinach". They were also at a party for Clive Davis (97 or 98) standing right next to each other and they wouldn't acknowledge each other. Maybe Larry said some things about Sly to P..(?)

Sly is high most times, and frankly that sounds more like Sly being his usual aloof self or threatened by just how good Prince was at what he did. Prince put out music every year, and Sly - allegedly recording all the time - has put out what... the dog to take a piss?

To answer the OP: I don't know where folks get these things. Why would Prince care what Jesse did on his own? Prince sampled "Crazay" in the "Housequake" remix, in case y'all forgot. So technically, Sly has been on a Prince record, although not of his own accord. lol

Why not ask if Sly was upset that Larry worked with Prince, or covered his songs? Like there's a rule of who can work with who?? It'd be pretty small of Prince to get all up in his feelings about "Crazay," arguably Sly's only real relevance from that point onward until now. Sans that one appearance where he just walked off the stage.

Interestingly,on the instrumental version of “Housequake”,titled “7 Minutes Mo’ Quake”,there is a very brief sample of “Crazay” on it.

I had heard that,in the mid-80s,Prince expressed a desire to work with Sly.He submitted a few songs to Sly but obviously the collaboration never happened.I always thought that the track “Make Yo Mama Happy” would have been perfect for Sly.

Wasn't there some rumor that Sly wrote a song for Prince?

There was in an interview with one of Sly's assistants and she said that Prince showed up at his door one day and Sly reacted with a 'What the fuck does he want?!' and had him sent off his property.

As I come to think of it, did Larry actually ever spoke again since Prince's passing ?

-

Larry being so reglieous, probably didn't approve of Sly's drug use and behaviour...

Prince might've been influenced to think the same...

Pure conjecture of course.

Wasn't there some story about Sly writing 6? Like some engineer who heard Sly working on it in the studio, and then hearing it a year later on the Madhouse record or something? I know it was spoken about in some fairly recent interview, but can't remember which.

I always wondered if Prince was a bit jealous Sly wanted to work with Jessie and not him. Sly was one of Prince's ultimate heroes, and his hero had no time for him, but had plenty of time for Jessie, who Prince often treated like an underling.

Sad if there was any rivalry between Prince and Sly, as more than anyone else, Sly was Prince's main influence and musical/image 'father'. Prince clearly worshipped Sly's classic music and much of his output was obviously majorly Sly influenced.

I guess Sly was paranoid about Prince and maybe jealous/annoyed that Prince borrowed so much of his style. In many ways they were similar, both highly intelligent, culturally aware artists with a strong sense of humour.

I believe Prince's relationship with James Brown was similarly distant and prickly, in contrast to Michael Jackson's relationship with JB.

IMO Prince fulfilled Sly's artistic potential for him, as Sly disappeared into the drugs/mental illness. I think if Sly had gotten fully clean by the late 80's, he and Prince would have connected like Prince did with Miles Davis.

I still think Sly was sad when Prince passed. He must have recognised the incredible talent and funk mastery of Prince.

Yep nod supposedly P purchased it from Sly as a way to help him financially , but that’s all we know. I hope someone who knows the scoop weigh in on this.

“Crazay” happened because of John McClain who orchestrated the duet between Jessie & Sly, supposedly Sly recorded the song separately from Jessie and only met during the day of the video shooting. Sly mentioned in some interview that he “never understood what the hell the song is about”.

As for the thread’s question, I don’t think Sly was jealous of P per se, he battled so many demons that made him alienate whoever was around. Even when he toured & opened for George Clinton’s P-Funk camp - according to Bootsy - it was a hard pill for him to do, because those were the guys who carried on what he was initially doing. I don’t think Prince was upset with him either, he was his hero, but he maintained his distance due to the drug abuse, Larry didn’t have to tell him anything, Sly’s drug problems were well known facts in the industry.

And why exactly didn't JB invite Prince to that 2003 BET award?

And I've never seen him talk any good thing about Prince. While it was always the other way around.

Prince was cocky, a lot of his peers & musical heros didn’t like him. Miles understood why he was cocky - he was cocky himself - that’s why they connected.

Every time I've seen Sly the last couple decades, dude looks and sounds pretty rough. I don't know about either of them being upset with the other.

I remember at one of the listening sessions for The Rainbow Children, Larry popped in to interact with the fans and Prince, and during a very long discussion about religion, someone mentioned that not everything in the Bible should be taken literally, citing the ugly and damaging things written about homosexuality. And he replied by talking about his cocaine addiction, and that "one day you just have to look in mirror and change the things about yourself that are wrong." It really made me sick to hear him compare cocaine addiction to being gay, and when I looked over at Prince after he said it, and he didn't have shit to say about it. I walked out of Paisley feeling grossed out by the whole thing.

Larry had a record back in the mid-70s talking about that, “men dressing like women, women dressing like men”, how it’s all a political conspiracy, I can’t remember the title, funky little ditty. But yeah, Mr. Graham has always been a raging homophobe, and he wasn’t a unique case at all considering the generation he came from. Still, it’s an unfortunate incident to witness.

I love Jesse, but am not sure why anyone, let alone Prince, would be 'upset' by such a forgettable song.

But then again, this is just another in a long line of trolling, clickbait posts from you, isn't it? You're not genuinely interested in objective discussion or people's replies at all, only agitating.

Sadly, it's essentially the belief of Jehovah's Witnesses as a religion and not unique to Larry singularly. Any JW openly practising homosexuality, transexuality, would be disfellowshipped from the congregation. The only option to remain in any kind of 'good standing' would be to be repressed. I know this from personal experience and it is still going on today among the approximately 8.4 million Jehovah's Witnesses globally, and that figure only defines those who are actively engaged in the door-to-door ministry, so the total figure is likely considerably higher than that.

That's quite a story (to me). Thank you for that.

I find it brave that you stood up and left.

It also is one of the reasons why I became less interested in Prince (after he met Larry).

I'm gay too and that really hurt - the way they were not up to confront the world the way it is.

Always hiding behind that thick unnuanced old vail of religion.

But as i got older my skin became thicker because you're bieng forced to move on in this complex world of hate and dislike. either you become a victim yourself.

Fortunately, it makes you stronger, and I started to develop indifference towards Prince (by Larry.)

The pettiness of hiding behind 2000 year old thinking will always affect me, although myy indeifference grew only more towwards these king of people. I don't hate 'm, they're just superficial and often pathetic.

Of course people can be religious (if they think they need it), but it should be private, and not judgemental.

Religion has always and unquestionably caused far more division, pain, wars, death and hatred than anything else.

Because of the obvious narrow petty thinking, they often don't realize the weight of their words and actions.

I wish I was there at one of those Celebrations (the world alone... gosh.) wink

I think there's more story to it. I remember hearing they both tried to collaborate to help Sly and nohing jived to come of it because Sly was already out of his mind by then. Jesse had more patience.
