Did Prince ever mention his son's death

in public or private (that we've heard of second-hand of course).

I don't think so. Unless someone heard something I haven't.

Until I find the righteous one...

Of course. And arguably "Until U're N My Arms Again."
I just meant is there tale of him mentioning it in a conversation.

I know people like Judith Hill and others have commented on their deep conversations. Was wondering if there was any mention of him ever bringing it up.

Until I find the righteous one...

I think it's a relevant question though.

Personally I don't think i've read or heard him say that, anywhere for what i know.

It's something unbearable to cope with in the first place, for anyone really.

He probably decided to never ever speak about it again, understandably.

Possibly not even with his closest people...

He just seemed the kind of guy who bottles everything up and barely processes it.

All guesses of course, but we actually will never really know.

I even wondered if he got to finish his book, if he should mentioned it.

I serously doubt it.

He's always been heavily influenced by religion for that matter too,

just knowing one has to survive such an aweful unhuman thing...

Cant recall if he ever mentioned it and dont blame him, one thing that stood out and was hard to watch was the Arsenio Hall interview in 2014. Prince congratulated Arsenio for becoming a father then his facial expression totally changed and looked to the audience..was very sad to see this.

No, only in song as some had mentioned.
Just because it is a sensetive subject doesnt mean we don't know about it or should not have discussed it. Especially those who werent there for when it all happened. Mayte revealed a lot about it in her book.

Come Back

[Verse 1]
Walking up the stairs
Chelsea afternoon
Sweet wind blew
And not a moment too soon, hoo
I cried when I realized
That sweet wind was you

[Verse 2]
Spirits come and spirits go
Some stick around for the aftershow
I don't have to say I miss you
(Don't have to say I miss you)
'Cause I think you already know, oh

[Verse 3]
If you ever lose someone dear to you
Never say the words
"They're gone"
And they'll come back, yeah
They'll come back, yeah
They'll come back
Tears go here

There's an interivew with Spike Lee where he asks P about it, published shortly after the loss of the child. Prince quotes "Come Back" and leaves it at that. Here's the link:

In Mayte's book, she provides some good insight into the events that surrounded this devastiging time in their lives.

This is why I wanted to read her book. All these other people claiming they wrote Purple Rain the film, they created the color purple, or Prince solely confided in them about whatever... sit down. Mayte married his ass. He was head over heels in love with her. Waiting on her for a few years to become legal and woo her and marry her. Wanted to have kids with her, build a life.

I wanted to read her story and hers alone. (If Manuela wrote a book, I'd read hers.) I was happy/sad to read the Amiir story in the book, and all that surrounded it. Her miscarriages, the birth, death, the filming of that goddamn video after he died!!!! The pain she must've felt having to sit with Oprah (not Oprah's fault here) and talk about things that didn't exist, or just flat out lie because of what he wanted to present to the world.

He was grieving too, so I'm not faulting him for stuff. I suppose I'm just saying, Mayte's book was great, and we got her side of the story that frankly - to this point - had been edited, erased, and rewritten by the man himself. But, for a man after the truth so much, it took him dying before we finally got it.

My heart goes out to Mayté, I can’t imagine the pain she had to endure. I can’t imagine what he had to endure as well. It’s not an easy subject to bring up, especially from somebody who’s not so publicly emotive like Prince. Two of the most formidable people in his life - his parents - passed away, and he never talked about their death to the press either, I don’t believe. He got sense, why talk about your grieves to a bunch of reporters who don’t give a damn and will probably treat them as a commodity.

I love that he made us turn to the music for clues like these though. That’s how it should be smile

I remember all the speculation at that time of whether the baby was alive or had passed. He hadn't played at Paisley Park since December 1995, then all the sudden he does two shows the same week the baby had passed. I though at the time, the baby must be alive, or why would he be doing this? I guess that was his way of coping. Sad.

...and i fully agree on all you said.

Well said.

Mayté at least wrote (a book) about it, while others said she did the money grabbing thing.

It is all much more complicated that that.

One never gets over losing a child, no one ever does.

Not Mayté, and certainly not Prince.

It's best to leave it all in peace.

Yes Prince had 'strange' behaviour directly after it all happened...

He probably did not know exactly how to react either, in his position, back then.

Just imagine all this, try to cope that.

Did he do right ? Wrong ?

Is it up to us fans to judge ?

I already judged before, and I regret it.

Because it doesn't change anything. It's not something up for critique or debate. We know when Prince mentioned his dead child. It's like asking, "do you think Prince really loved purple?"

Even the OP, who is quasi-curious about this topic, posted an answer to it. So it seems that maybe they were just a little bored rather than trying to actually engage someone in a conversation.

Slight thread drift... And far be it from me to start another lyric debate. But what in the blue hell is a "Chelsea afternoon?"

It could be a reference to tea in Chelsea (UK). It could also be a New York reference to just a day in the New York neighborhood.

100% agree with all of that.

Mayte painfully told us all everything we needed to know. It must have hurt to even write that all down because I cried reading it. Her book was astounding look into their lives at the time, which is more complex, fun and arresting than I ever would have thought.

I take it to mean a 'mellon collie' afternoon.

I meant in context to the song. Y'know, if you Google lyrics, if they're accurate, you'll get a result or 300. "Chelsea afternoon" offers NO LINK to the Prince song "Come Back." Do you know why...?

Because that ain't the correct lyric.
