Prince was never gonna do a DC hardcore or punk project really

He never did music that hard

He usually always tempered it a bit

He was less interested in what was happening in rock after the 80s

Which is why he lost his edge as an innovator in a sense as in.the 80s he was listening to everything

In the 90s and esp the 00s he was retreating into his own older influences and more rnb and rap influences even if he did try to keep up with dance music a little bit. But I think that happens to everyone, you vajt he totally in sync forever

I agree with you on that fully.

He continued to make incredible music regardless - but I'd have loved to hear his music from a parallel timeline. I guess it just means there is still not enough Prince music out there, which sound absurdly greedy of me.

Edit to add:
That thought about retreating into your main music - that shit is scary and I only ever see it hurt people.

I consider Bambi to be his hardest hard rock song.

Loose is not a rock song, people. Hello?
Yes it is! There is a rock guitar solo in it even? It's pretty clearly a take on the then burgeoning industrial rock of the time. NIN, Ministry, Marilyn Manson, etc. These, and the song Loose, are absolutely rock.

I don't consider Loose to be a rock song. It's hard, yes, but it's too electronic for most people to think of it as rock. Most people have a more organic sound in mind when they think of rock.

I understand that some critics may have created a label for a new rock genre to include artists like NIN, but again, I doubt the mass public would put think of them as rock, at least not off the top of their heads. YOu might be able to talk them into it.

Seeing these guys live, touring with other rock bands, with overdriven guitars, there is little doubt what their genre is. But yes critics had a new part of the sound to contend with but I'm a bit puzzled by this idea that the majority of people don't associate them with rock. They're almost exclusively played on rock radio and you can find them in the rock section of your local record store,

Relistening to Loose it occurs to me it even has big rock guitar powerchord riffs all over it!

So idk probably *I* won't convince anyone - but a deeper listen to the song and context behind its creation might.

I'll leave it be with this tho -

if we were talking about the Crystal Ball version 'Get Loose' then I would totally agree with you both.

Comparing the two makes the rock aspects of the initially released version from Come very very obvious. If 'Get Loose' had been on Come instead I would absolutely never call it rock of any sort.
