My fav is the next line "Love is too weak to define, just what you mean to me"

"You know, this is funky but I wish he'd play like he used to, old scragglyhead son of a...*smack* OOH!"

"Who's the foo singing will it's would"

I concur with the OP that the opening of LRC is his greatest piece of poetry. It packs an entire short story into a few lines. Even Bob Dylan would have been proud to write those lines.

On a philosophical level, I think there’s another few lines for me. “It’s easy to say I love you / but it’s harder to forgive.” This is a profound idea that is also incredibly true.

And as a prophetic voice, one more: “systematic overthrow of the underclass / Hollywood conjures images of the past.” If only Prince had kept up this kind of critique in subsequent albums. Unlike a lot of his other, especially later rants, this one has no BS in it. No generalized “problems” or half baked rants or jumbled metaphors for decay. It’s specific, it’s strong, it’s frightening and it seems truer now than thirty plus years ago.

It's a profound idea and it's true, but I'm not sure if it's very poetic. It sounds more like something that comes out of a self help book.
If you take any of this seriously, you're a bigger fool than I am.

Have you ever been so lonely

Have you ever wanted to play

I can't think of any examples of anything that would be called poetic in Prince's lyrics. Florid and overwraught, perhaps - but not poetic. Maybe a little of what your average 14 year old girl would describe as poetic can be found.

This.

Ironically, being a Prince fan was a big part of why it really resonated with me.

Interesting thought. Maybe we're going to have to think about what "poetic" really means.

Sandra St. Victor's lyrics were a blueprint for the version that Prince did. Her version is quite different. I've tried to find them online but can't seem to get them anywhere. There was a thread started on here that had a link to them but it is no longer working.

I thought Martika wrote the lyrics.

If I recall, she wrote the phrase ‘love thy will be done, I can no longer hide, I can no longer run’ and Prince took it from there.

That said, and I’ve posted this before, the lyric quoted above re ‘all of your creations’ is one of the most interesting of his career. It’s a love song that can only really apply to one single person - Prince. And he likely wrote it himself!!

Reminds me of McCartney, of course.

And in the end
The love we take
Is equal to
The love we make

I know this may be blasphemy, but generally speaking I don't think Prince was a good lyracist. Sure there are many great lyrics you can point to, but when the guy wrote well over 1,000 songs, he was bound to hit pay dirt occassionally, from luck if nothing else. But on the whole, I think he was a mediocre lyracist.

WIth that said, two songs that I believe have genuie lyrics are "Joy in Repetition" and "The Ballad of Dorothy Parker". Every line in both of them is poetic.

Listen to those 1000+ songs once again.

i'm sure you will hear many more than just 2

falloff
