Friction is an unreleased song recorded in Spring 1981, at Prince's Kiowa Trail Home Studio in Chanhassen, Minnesota. It is not known if the track was intended for Prince's next album (which became Controversy) or any other project. The song remains unreleased.

Yeah, the poster comes with the album.

Back in 1981,I knew this girl who had the cassette but she wanted the poster really bad.We were at a record store in the mall. She opened a copy of the album, took the poster, slipped it down her blouse and zipped her jacket up. lol her attitude was like “well I bought the cassette so I deserve the poster, too!”

p 48 chapter 4 Pawns Possessed: the Rise & Fall of Prince

The hostilities burst to the surface during the last show of the tour at Riverfront Stadium in Cincinnati. During their opening set, the Time found themselves being pelted by eggs from offstage. Gradually, they realized that Prince and some of his band members were the culprits. The barrage increased, and, toward the end of the set, Prince and his accomplices abducted Jerome Benton, a dancer for the group, from the stage and poured honey all over him. They they pelted hims with garbage. "They tarred and feathered him, basically," recalled Fink, who did not participate and insisted to the Time members that he wanted no part of the battle.

Then, as the Time's set ended, Chick Huntsberry grabbed Jesse Johnson and hauled him to Prince's dressing room. There, Huntsberry handcuffed Johnson to a horizontal coat rack bolted into a brick wall. Prince came in and began taunting Johnson and tossing Doritos chips and other pieces of food at him. "This is what you get for talking about my mama!" Prince shouted.

The various members of Prince's band and crew in the room looked on with horror as the episode continued. "It was a cruel thing to do," observed Bennett. Fink recalled, "I just sat there and said to myself, this is getting out of hand."
Humiliated and frightened, Johnson writhed in his cuffs. Finally, to the amazement of the onlookers, he managed to rip the entire twelve-foot-long coat rack out of the wall. His hands were still cuffed to the rack, which he began swinging wildly. "Jesse was uncontrollable," Fink said. "He just lost it. Chick had to contain the situation before someone got hurt."

Dear Uncle George is an unreleased song believed to have been recorded in early-to-mid 1981 at the Kiowa Trail Home Studio in Chanhassen, Minnesota. The song’s music was re-used (although possibly re-recorded) with new lyrics to become the track Private Joy (recorded in August 1981). It is not known if the track was intended for Prince's next album (which became Controversy) before being given new lyrics. The song remains unreleased.

Yep, this is the poster that came with the album but it didn't have the words on it, just Prince in the shower. By the way, the re-release on 180 gram vinyl has the poster included.

Putting aside the infamous L.A. gig opening for the Rolling Stones, what's the most insane thing you've ever seen or experienced onstage? And as mortifying as that first Stones show was, how did you find the overwhelming courage to do it again the second night? So much respect is due to you all.
Dez Dickerson: The folklore surrounding those shows is fairly epic, especially regarding how things went down Day 1 versus Day 2. The shows took place with a day off in between, on Friday and Sunday, and we had a very different experience on the first show than the second. The response after the first song on the first day was something I'll never forget — the sound of 120,000 people cheering is almost overwhelming. In addition to rank and file fans, there were hundreds of Hell's Angels in the audience. They did not look favorably on a short black man wearing high heels, leg warmers, bikini underwear and a trenchcoat, singing in falsetto, on the Stones' stage, and they let us know, along with a few other similarly inclined individuals. They threw paper Coke cups and booed heartily, but they were outnumbered by those who cheered us.It was enough to rattle Prince, though, who exited the stage early and left the band onstage to fend for themselves. He left the stadium and went straight to the airport, returning to Minneapolis. Bill Graham, the promoter, got up onstage and cussed out the people he singled out as troublemakers, and he got booed. The word that went out between Friday and Sunday is that we had been booed off the stage, which was not true — Bill got booed, we just cut our set short. A station that broadcast live from the stadium misreported the booing thing, and the legend grew until Sunday, by which time thousands came to the show intent on running us out of town. In the interim, after attempts by both our managers and Mick Jagger to convince Prince to come back and do the second show, I was asked by management to call and talk to him. We talked for 45 minutes, and I convinced him to get on a plane and come back. It was a bit like landing on Normandy Beach on stage the second day, but we did our entire set and left on our terms — that was important to us.

B SIDE

Sittin' outside your door
About to break down
Fourth time this week
Somebody's come around
Who's it gonna be tonight
Who's the lucky man?
Where you get the attitude
I'll never understand
Uh-oh, here he comes now
So happy that he came
Hey, was it good, boy?
Thoughts on, of her aim
What goes on inside your head
That makes you want to take them all to bed?
Gotta stop, gotta-gotta stop messin' about
You know you gotta stop, gotta-gotta stop messin' about
Ow!
Uh-oh, yeah
When I call you on the phone
You act so unconcerned
(I wanna) I want to get you all alone (ooh, baby)
To show you what I've learned
You won't give me the time of day
You won't give me some time
You won't give me anything
God, you think you're too fine
Can't you see?
All I want is a little time
Been playing with my toy so much I'm gonna go blind
Gotta stop, gotta gotta stop messin' about
You gotta stop, gotta gotta stop messin' about
Ooh, ow!
Uh-oh, yeah
You, oh, gotta stop, gotta-gotta stop messin' about
You gotta stop, gotta-gotta stop messin' about
You gotta stop, gotta-gotta stop messin' about
You do it too much
You gotta stop, gotta-gotta stop messin' about
Ooh, stop!

Where was this photo taken and when? The hangers have “Key Club” on them, which I thought initially was from Sunset Strip, but then realised it was a dry cleaning company, possibly based somewhere in Illinois.

Any chance you can give details in future alongside the photos, if known, e.g. where, when, photographer. This Controversy era is fascinating, looking forward to Duane Tudahl’s sessions book of this time.
There may or may not be something coming!

The songs/message were strong enough on their own. BUT I do wish the promotion was just a little more defining. I definately wish he used more B sides for this album. Instead of scrapping the 2nd Coming film he should have used some of the footage in a video, maybe introduced the Hookers or Susan and Kim in parts during the tour or a show @ First Avenue

Another thing I would have liked to have seen.....the song "Private Joy" released as a single.

It's a fun, bouncy, highly danceable track.I am sure it would have been a big hit, even with the pop crowd.

-

I fully agree on that one.

Actually, imho, they can still release it as a single for a future Controversy SDE package.

I'm sure it'll survive the test of time for the charts.
