So basically this album is going to sit somewhere around 200-250k but prob the lower end of that estimate .

That's largely from physical sales of a product with a high average selling point.

Seems a decent result given the zero promotion.

If a prince product was promoted he could easily still be selling half a million albums but the benefits of promotion go beyond the immediate release and also translate into even higher legacy sales.

I agree.
The best way of promoting the album was to go on tour with all the living talents ( that is to say : everybody but Prince!) and perform the songs of the album on tv show, awards, etc.

They could have done music videos:
- a lyric/pictured video for W2A,
- a video illustrating Born 2 Die directed by Spike Lee
- a video with footages of on Hot Summer live
- a video with archival demonstrations for We will All B free
- an animated video for 1000 light years.

Now that they have a decent concert to show, they could also broadcast it on worldwide televisions.
Or chose another one to broadcast to make an event around the album, with just cutting the TMBGITW extract.

They could so release on the official channel the professionnally filmed video of live performances of W2A, Hot Summer amd Check the Record.

Wasn't there a settlement in the Italian TMBGITW bullcrap lawsuit?

No because obviously TGE wasn't re-rrleased, the song is still neither downloadable, nor streamable.
Matthieu Bitton said the sampler set with TMBGITW prevented Sony from releasing another show that was professionnally filmed.

Very good 5th week of sales in Japan[/b] : it climbs from an unknown rank in the top 300 last week, to #33 with 1,540 sales.
Total sales : 12,000

Like I predicted it, that is thanks to the release of the SDE being postponed to the 25th of August in that country.

That's better than most of the releases nowadays.
You also have to take into account the set at 100 bucks contains in fact twice the album.
So in fact theres already more than 200,000 copies sold.

This is really good business nowadays, with a very limited marketing budget.

The week of release, the hyper marketed Billie Eilish new album did only like three times in the USA, the numbers of W2A in term of sales. In Japan and France, two times more only.
And she hasn't a SDE at 100 bucks.
But she has multi millions budget videos.

So who is really making more money?

Plus seemingly there was very little recording cost for the CD, i.e. just copy/rip the CD-Rs found! Likely a bit more cost for the blu-Ray (atoms sound and all that shenanigans) but then the mark up on that (the Deluxe with the extra paraphernalia) is tremendous - well it is in the UK.

Do you think the Estate, including Primary Wave, is bothered about Prince’s negligible streaming or may be there’s an effort to boost it, for future profits. Otherwise, once the physical sales of one release have dipped, they may as well start the next campaign.
There may or may not be something coming!

We are in a singles or song purchase time period with a lot of streaming. Which means little money making off of music sales. Except for legendary artists.

That's obviously BS because :

1) they stopped reissues one year and an half ago. The most bankable track of that era 1994-2010 is obviously TMBGITW, so that was the most bankable release.
2) they didn't even released the track on streaming yet. It takes what? One minute to put it on line?
3) they were not able to release a live from W2A with the sampler set, just because of a few seconds of TMBGITW

Record stores are making money ONLY from physical sales.
So they're now kind of happy with Prince'release.

Best selling albums in the US in 2021 so far, as of week 34

Rank Estimated 2021 Sales TITLE Artist Estimated Total Sales
16 140,000 THRILLER Michael Jackson 7,374,000
20 121,000 PURPLE RAIN Prince 4,166,000
67 69,000 WELCOME 2 AMERICA Prince 69,000

162 33,000 THE ESSENTIAL Michael Jackson 2,864,000
xxx 13,000 THE TRUTH Prince 13,000

Like I predicted it a few months ago, Purple Rain will top the 250k at the end of the year, which is incredible these days.
Last year, week 34, PR sold "only" 59k copies, and ended at 115k for the whole year 2020.
The remaster will be released on vinyl in November, which could push these numbers even higher for the holiday season.

W2A now outsold in only 4 weeks what Original sold during the whole year of 2019.
Originals was the 133th best selling album of the year 2019 with 68,000 copies sold.

I added MJ's sales because Thriller (34*P) and The Essential (5*P) just went to be recertified by the RIAA, along with Bad (11*P) and Number Ones (5*P).

MJ's estate are pricks, but at least they are keen on recertifying every single shit he released, while we hear rumours of a new album coming soon.

I hope Prince'estate does the same for the whole Prince catalogue soon.

Welcome 2 America 5th week :

UK physical sales : #99 (-26)
Belgium ( Flanders) : #28 (-7)
Belgium ( Wallonia) : #99 (-64)

Some countries are very late in updating their charts.
Portugal updates his charts once a month (!).

Chartrun in Portugal : 2-6-5-19.
This is currently the #1134 best chartrun of all time in that country.

Chartrun in Spain ( official top album) : 7-35-71

Swiss charts for the 5th week of W2A : #33(-2).

Everywhere in the world, W2A seems to have legs, as if it was promoted like in the 90's, but it's not.

Sony obviously stopped buying views of W2A and Hot Summer on YouTube.
In like 10 days, they bought 600.000 views for W2A, whereas in 4 months and an half it originally did 800,000.

So W2A is now the #46 best viewed "video" Of Prince on YouTube with 1,413,000 views. Just above, at #45 is Thieves In The Temple, which was a #1 Cashbox single in the USA 31 years ago, with 1,453,000 views. It was being too ludicrous to be honest.

Now, it seems W2A is suddenly only doing 2k views/a day, which is another proof of the fraud.
The Grammys nominations are based on the movements happening during the month of September. So, I bet, like I said from the beginning, they are willing to get some big awards.

Of course, that's why we ended up with this live in W2A.

But, MJ had the same problem with YANA.
The MJ's estate never stopped the streaming of the audio amd the video of that song, and never put out of print History or the several greatest hits package with that song in it.

I don't understand, why almost 30 years later after the initial lawsuit it is still a problem.
That also prevented Sony from releasing a true The Hits 3 in 2018.

19 124,000 PURPLE RAIN Prince & the Revolution 4,169,000

W2A is currently the #15 best selling album released in 2021

Yes, that means that this year, only 14 albums newly released did better in the US than this posthumous release, that Prince thought it didn't deserved to be released (!).

And among these 14 albums, you can be sure they all have better promotion and exposition than W2A, with real music videos, a lot of airplay, a tour, etc., and cheaper price.

Why are people all of a sudden buying When Doves Cry on iTunes?

There was a 69 cent sale on soundtrack songs. iTunes sales numbers are so low now that a discount on an old hit can get it pretty high on the chart.
